Objective(s):The characteristics of OMSI patients in oral and maxillofacial space infection(OMSI)were analyzed retrospectively in terms of gender, age, visit time, place of residence, season of onset, source of infection, distribution of pathogenic bacteria, number of infection space and number of complications. In order to provide certain theoretical basis for predicting the development of OMSI,We study the correlation between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio(NLR),interleukin 6(IL-6),procalcitonin(PCT)and clinical manifestations of OMSI,and we also explore the value of NLR,IL-6,and PCT in predicting the severity of OMSI.Methods:We collected the clinical data of 53 OMSI patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,Stomatological Hospital Affiliated to Kunming Medical University from September 2021 to February 2023.venous blood are drawn from all patients within 2 hours after admission, and routine blood counts,IL-6 and PCT levels were determined. The gender, age, visit time, place of residence, incidence season, source of infection, distribution of pathogenic bacteria, number of infection gap and number of complications of the subjects were statistically analyzed to analyze the clinical characteristics of this disease.Pearson(normally distributed data)or Spearman correlation coefficient(non-normally distributed data)was calculated to determine the correlation between NLR,IL-6 and PCT and the number of complications and the number of infection gaps.Multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the value of NLR,IL-6 and PCT in predicting the severity of OMSI.Results:1.A total of 53 hospitalized OMSI patients were included in this study, including 32 males(60.38%)and 21 females(39.62%),with a male to female ratio of 1.52∶1.Patients ranged in age from 6 to 87 years old,and middle-aged and elderly(over 45 years old)accounted for a large proportion(75%).There were more patients in autumn and winter(38%and 40%,respectively).The highest number of patients are seen 7-9 days after onset(32%).The main source was odontogenic infection(92.45%),and the bacterial culture results showed that Gram-positive bacteria accounted for a large proportion(61.69%).The most common site was submandibular space(75.47%).The incidence of complications was high(66.04%),among which hypoproteinemia(97.14%)was the most common complication.2.The number of complications was positively correlated with NLR(r_s=0.317,P=0.021),IL-6(r_s=0.779,P<0.001),and PCT(r_s=0.782,P<0.001).The number of infection gaps was positively correlated with NLR(r_s=0.407,P=0.003),IL-6(r_s=0.787,P<0.001)and PCT(r_s=0.731,P<0.001).Multivariate regression analysis showed that IL-6(β=0.503,P=0.002)was a predictor of the number of complications, while NLR(β=0.285,P=0.013)and IL-6(β=0.517,P<0.001)were predictors of the number of infection Spaces.Conclusion(s):1.Hospitalized OMSI tends to occur in middle-aged and elderly people; Most patients did not seek medical treatment in time after onset; The most common site for infection is the submandibular space.2.The complication rate of OMSI is high.Hypoproteinemia is the main complication. In the course of clinical treatment, albumin content should be monitored and corrected in time to reduce the occurrence of complications.3.NLR,IL-6 and PCT are related to the severity of OMSI.IL-6 can predict the number of complications.NLR and IL-6 can predict the number of infection space.NLR and IL-6 can predict the severity of OMSI,which is helpful to evaluate the general situation of OMSI patients.
