Research On The Framework Of Medical Personnel Reports Of Southern Weekly During COVID-19 Outbreak

Since the outbreak of COVID-19,many health workers have combatted the pandemic as frontline fighters in response to the nation’s call.In accordance with Party and government requirements,the media also redoubled their effort to educate the public through news and to guide public opinion,telling touching stories about the prevention of and fight against COVID in a colorful way.How the media report on medical personnel is not only related to the orderly progress of the whole epidemic prevention and fighting work,but also plays an irreplaceable guiding role in maintaining the harmony and stability of the whole society and creating a social atmosphere of strong confidence,warmth and popular support.This paper takes the traditional media Southern Weekly as its research subject,and has taken reports related to "medical care" "doctors" and "nurses" as its research samples.It uses framework analysis as its main research method with textual analysis aiding the research process.The paper uses the method of frame layering and studies the research samples on three levels(i.e.high,middle,and low)to grasp the characteristics of the reports about medical stall in Southern Weekly.Based on the white paper " Fighting COVID-19: China in Action" released by the State Council Information Office of the People’s Republic of China in June 2020,it divides China’s arduous process to fight against the epidemic into five stages.This paper selects the news reports about medical care in Southern Weekly from December27,2019 to May 31,2020.It has constructed an indicator system that analyzes the framework of the reports on three levels: high,medium and low.Specifically,the high level includes the theme,genre,source of information,reporting tendency,and stage of report.The medium level includes the main events,background introductions,descriptions of details,presentations of results,evaluations and feedback.Finally,the low level includes the types of titles,modes of quotations,forms of reports,and modifiers.Through the analysis of these three levels,this paper studies the framework of the newspapers’ medical personnel reports.This study finds that,as for the news content,the headlines of the medical personnel reports are narrative.There are combinations of direct and indirect citations.The forms of report are determined by the style of newspaper.The number of reports correlates with the projection of the pandemic.When it comes to the news format,newsletter is the main genre,while the themes of the reports such as COVID treatment,prevention,and control are significant.The tone is generally positive.The source of information is centralized and single.Regarding the reporting framework,it mainly presents the typical propaganda framework,other frameworks are human flavor framework,fact framework and knowledge framework.In sum,these reports portray the health personnel as soldiers in white who are fighting for the people’s lives,great doctors who respect and bless lives,and ordinary people with multiple roles.
