Objective: This paper discusses the advantages of polymer plaster external fixation through the retrospective analysis of the datum of cases of elderly patients with distal radius fractures treated with polymer plaster external fixation and palmar locking plate internal fixation.Method: The data of clinical cases and imaging data of 141 patients with distal radius fractures admitted to the Department of Orthopaedics of the Third People’s Hospital of Hubei Province from January 2018 to July 2022 and included into the inclusion standards were chosen for a retrospective comparative study. The 141 patients were divided into plaster group(n=64 cases)and operation group(n=77 cases),in order to compare the 6-week and 1-year wrist joint rating scales between the conservative treatment group of polymer plaster support and the operation group of palmar locking plate, the pain scores of VAS visual analogue scales, the radiologic palmar tilt angle and ulnar tilt angle before and after treatment, the incidences of complications after treatment, the operation time of the two groups and the lengths of admission on the basis of the two treatment methods. The above indicators are used to judge whether the treatment method of plaster external fixation enjoys its advantages by comparison. Results: After six weeks of treatment in this study, the excellent and good rate of the wrist joint rating scale in plaster group was 75.0%(48/64),which was lower than that in operation group(84.4%,66/77);the excellent and good rate of the wrist joint rating scale in operation group was relatively higher than that in plaster group. At one year, the excellent and good rate of the wrist joint rating scale in plaster group was 87.5%(46/64),which was not significantly different from that in operation group(89.6%,69/77).χ2=5.518,P=0.138>0.05.After 1 year of treatment, there was no significant statistical difference in the wrist joint rating scale between the two groups. After 6 weeks of treatment, the VAS score Z=-4.311,P< 0.05;after one year of treatment, the VAS score of plaster group and operation group were Z=-1.637,P = 0.102 > 0.05,which was not statistically significant. Conclusion: According to the short-term and long-term scores and indicators of polymer plaster external fixation and palmar locking plate internal fixation in the treatment of distal radius fractures,it is concluded by comparison that surgical treatment boasts a comparatively good effect on the recovery of wrist joint function and the state of illness in the early phase, but there exists no distinct difference between the two treatment methods for the recovery of function in the long run.
