Objective:The pattern of cognitive impairment in COPD is analyzed from two aspects: the duration(years)of the disease course in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)patients and the degree of pulmonary function impairment. Methods:The present study enrolled patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)who received medical care at the Affiliated Hospital of Changchun University of Traditional Chinese Medicine between January and October 2022.Patient demographics, disease duration,as well as Forced Expiratory Volume in One Second/Forced Vital Capacity(FEV1/FVC)and Forced Expiratory Volume in One Second(FEV1)data were collected. To assess cognitive function, the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE)and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(Mo CA)were employed, with resulting scale scores documented.Data were subjected to statistical analysis via one-way analysis of variance and rank sum test, with the aim of investigating the patterns of cognitive impairment in COPD patients. Results:A total of 142 cases of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)were collected for this study,of which 131 patients cooperated to complete the cognitive function questionnaire.Among them, there were 77 male patients(58.78%)and 54 female patients(41.22%);the duration of illness ranged from 1 to 30 years, with 48 cases lasting less than 10 years,58 cases lasting 10 to 20 years, and 25 cases lasting more than 20 years.Among all patients, there were 34 cases of grade 1 lung function,64 cases of grade 2,23 cases of grade 3,and 10 cases of grade 4.Statistical analysis of MMSE and Mo CA scores showed that cognitive function of COPD patients was related to the degree of lung function impairment and duration of illness(P <0.05).The MMSE results showed that the decrease in attention was related to the degree of lung function impairment and duration of illness, while impairment in orientation, memory, recall, and three-step command ability may be related to the duration of illness. The Mo CA results showed that impairment in visual-spatial and executive ability, attention, and delayed recall were related to the degree of lung function impairment and duration of illness, while impairment in orientation was related to the duration of illness. Conclusion:The impairment of cognitive function in COPD patients is related to the severity of lung function impairment and disease duration, indicating that the longer the disease duration and/or the more severe the lung function impairment, the more serious the cognitive impairment in patients. The statistical results show that the cognitive dysfunction in COPD patients mainly manifests as damage in cognitive domains such as memory, attention, orientation, and thinking comprehension. In addition, the results of this study are consistent with previous reports, further validating the same viewpoints and conclusions in the literature.
