W.H.welch’s Contribution To The Rise Of Public Health Education In America

As one of the most advanced countries in public health education,the United States has one of the most comprehensive public education systems in the world.In1916,the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health(hereafter referred to as the School of Public Health)was established,which pioneered public health education in the United States.Its founder and first dean,W.H.Welch,was a modern American public health scientist and medical educator.With extraordinary ability and long-term vision,he founded the first School of Public Health in the United States,trained a number of talents,spread the Hopkins model,contributed to the emergence of public health education in the United States,and made great contributions to public health education in the world.This paper is divided into three chapters.which follows Welch and the process of the emergence of public health education in the United States to mainly analyze the foundation of the Hopkins School of Public Health.The first chapter analyzes the historical background of the emergence of public health education in the United States.Since the mid-19 th century,advances in science and technology have brought about the industrial revolution and leaps and bounds in human productivity,but they have also produced a series of negative effects,damaging the society with ever-increasing environmental pollution and epidemic diseases.Compared with Western Europe,the medical system of the United States was backward and lack of public health education at that time,and the Civil War exposed the shortcomings of the domestic medical system,so its medical education is badly in need of a change.At that time,Welch had just returned from his studies in Western Europe and was already making a name for himself as dean of the Hopkins University School of Medicine.He tried to save the backward American medicine.The second chapter elaborates W.H.Welch and the rise of public health education in the U.S.The first half of the twentieth century witnessed a period of dramatic change in American medicine.The publication of the Flaxner Report in 1910 not only exposed the ugliness of medical education during the Progressive Era,but also spurred innovation in higher education,including medical education.At the same time,Welch and others submitted the Welch-Ross Report describing a blueprint for public health education to the Rockefeller Foundation.This report planed the establishment of health colleges dedicated to the protection of life,the preservation of health,and the prevention of diseases.With the support of the Rockefeller Foundation,the Hopkins School of Public Health was formally established in 1916.Welch provided advice and recruited talents,working with the faculty to build a high-quality teaching and research team and a world-class School of Public Health.The third chapter discusses the historical impact of the emergence of public health education in the United States.This chapter focuses on the successful foundation of the Hopkins School of Public Health and its benefits to society,which led many colleges and universities to incorporate public health programs into their development plans and to learn from the Hopkins experience.Since the 1920 s and1930s,the Hopkins model has not only flourished in China,but has also gone abroad to create schools of public health in China and elsewhere,sending tens of thousands of talented people to the world of public health education and making an indelible contribution to the health of the world’s people.
