Objective: To review and evaluate the incidence, infiltration pattern, clinical pathology and immunophenotype characteristics of lymphoma involvement and investigate the relationship between lymphoma and prognosis. Methods: The correlation of bone marrow involvement and infiltration pattern of 213 lymphoma patients(diffuse type, nodular type, parababecular type, mesenchymal type or mixed type),were analyzed, combined with the clinical features of B symptoms, lymph node enlargement, hemorrhage, fibrosis and necrosis. Results: The incidence of lymphoma with bone marrow involvement in this study was 32.8%(213/650).The most common type of lymphoma was B small lymphocytic lymphoma(58/213,27.2%).The infiltration pattern was mostly of the interstitial type(72/213,33.8%),followed by diffuse(45 /213,21.1%)and mixed(45/213,21.1%).Most mantle cell lymphomas present with a diffuse infiltration pattern. The stromal type is the only infiltrating pattern seen in Hodgkin’s lymphoma.Matnel cell lymphoma and diffuse large B cell lymphoma often show necrosis and fibrosis.Patients with diffuse infiltration have a shorter survival and poor prognosis, compared with interstitial and parabecular types.Factors such as age of 60 years and bone marrow stromal fibrosis were associated with patient outcomes. Conclusion: Different types of lymphoma have corresponding characteristic bone marrow infiltration pattern, morphology and immunophenotype. In some cases, the identification of infiltration patterns facilitates the classification of lymphomas.Differences in bone marrow infiltration patterns and background changes may also contribute to a poor prognosis.
