Cholera is a severe intestinal infectious disease caused by infection with Vibrio cholerae. After infection, patients often vomit and diarrhoea continuously, causing rapid dehydration of the body, leading to heart failure and death.Due to its strong infectivity, high mortality, and frequent outbreaks,it has always been the focus of the government’s epidemic prevention work.In 1944,it was listed as one of the ten statutory infectious diseases. It,together with pestis and smallpox, was called the three major infectious diseases of the Republic of China, leaving a strong mark in China’s modern epidemic prevention history. As a famous big city and port in China,Shanghai has frequent exchanges and close contacts with foreign countries in modern society, but its environmental sanitation is poor, and it has various conditions for cholera outbreaks. Therefore, cholera outbreaks frequently occurred in modern Shanghai, which is even known as an endemic disease in Shanghai. In 1932,the cholera epidemic first broke out in Shanghai, with a large number of infected patients.Later,it gradually spread to various provinces across the country, causing large-scale casualties nationwide, and also having a certain impact on the development and construction of public health undertakings everywhere. This article takes cholera in Shanghai in 1932 as the research object, and is divided into four chapters to discuss. The first part briefly describes the outbreak of cholera in Shanghai in 1932 and its nationwide spread, focusing on the epidemic situation in Shanghai this year and the process of cholera spreading to various provinces throughout the country. The second part introduces the government and civil response measures and the prevention and control effects achieved after the outbreak of cholera in Shanghai in 1932 based on the information left by newspapers and the Port Quarantine Administration. At the same time,it analyzes the characteristics of this cholera prevention and control, and summarizes experience and shortcomings. The third part analyzes the two-way interaction between the cholera epidemic and the development of public health in Shanghai based on the analysis of government bulletins, local chronicles, and the annual reports of the Ministry of Industry, thereby demonstrating the difficult and tortuous development path of public health in modern Shanghai. The cholera epidemic is bound to cause serious harm to society, but it has also promoted the progress of public health in Shanghai, and medical and health institutions have also been further improved. At the same time, progress in public health has also led to better prevention of infectious diseases. The fourth part analyzes the causes of cholera outbreaks and summarizes the enlightenment of the frequent occurrence of infectious diseases such as cholera during the Republic of China on our current epidemic prevention cause. The outbreak of cholera is the result of a combination of natural and social factors. Its prevalence and spread indicate that people must adapt to social development and learn to coexist harmoniously with nature.
