Expression And Clinical Significance Of Serum Sphingosine 1-Phosphate In Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Background Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSAS)is a public health issue of concern.There is an urgent need for a reasonable biomarker to screen patients with OSAS.The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between serum sphingosine-1-phosphate(S1P)concentrations and the presence and severity of OSAS.Methods A retrospective study of 111 patients who were admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University for general surgery from September2018 to June 2022 who wanted to undergo weight loss metabolic surgery,all patients underwent nocturnal PSG.86 of them were diagnosed with OSAS,and the remaining25 were set up as a control group.Serum S1 P levels were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),and general information and relevant clinical data were collected and analyzed at the same time.Results There was a significant decrease in serum S1 P in OSAS patients compared with control subjects.Among OSAS patients,serum S1 P level progressively decreased with severity of OSAS.Linear regression analyses revealed the strong negative association between serum S1 P level with apnea-hypopnea index(AHI),and positive association between S1 P level with lowest saturation oxygen(LSa O2).Furthermore,Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve test demonstrated that serum S1 P showed a better predictive capacity for OSAS compared to Epworth Sleepiness Scale(ESS)and STOP scores in OSAS screening.Conclusion Serum S1 P has a reasonable specificity,sensitivity and positive predictive value in the diagnosis of OSAS.Thus,serum S1 P can be a potential diagnostic biomarker for OSAS.
