Objective:To explore the correlation between metabolic syndrome and lumbar disc degeneration and inflammatory factors. Methods:Forty patients who were hospitalized at the Department of Spine Surgery of our hospital and treated with the operation between April 2021 and December 2021 were selected.According to whether the patients had metabolic syndrome, the patients were divided into a control group(20 cases)and a case group(20 cases). Our study tested some clinical indices including height, weight, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipids. Then the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)was used to detect the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)and interleukin-1β(IL-1β)in degenerative intervertebral disc tissue. We used the Pfirrmann grading method of lumbar magnetic resonance to evaluate the degree of lumbar disc degeneration in the surgical segment. And we performed the visual analog scale(VAS)to evaluate the degree of radicular pain in each group. For comparison, the t-test or the nonparametric rank sum test was used to identify the difference between the control and the case.At least,Spearman correlation analysis was used to investigate the correlation between the expression of TNF-α and IL-1β,Pfirrmann grade, and VAS score. Results:The expression of TNF-αand IL-1βin nucleus pulposus tissue were(11.96±2.12)pg/ml and(12.06±2.48)pg/ml.And in the case group, they were(10.56±1.99)pg/ml and(9.89±2.8)pg/ml,respectively.We found that the expression of TNF-αand IL-1βin the case group was higher than the control group(P<0.05).VAS score of the case group was 8.50(7.00-9.75)and Pfirrmann grade was 4(4-5),VAS score of the control group was 7.00(5.25-8.00)and Pfirrmann grade was 3(3-4),both of which were higher than those of the control group(P < 0.05).Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the expression level of TNF-α was a positive correlation with the Pfirrmann grading method of lumbar magnetic resonance(r=0.374)and VAS score(r=0.629)(P<0.05).And the expression level of IL-1 β also had a positive correlation with the Pfirrmann grading method of lumbar magnetic resonance(r=0.604)and VAS score(r=0.874)(P<0.05).Conclusions:1.The inflammatory factors of TNF-αand IL-1βare over-expressed in the nucleus pulposus of patients with metabolic syndrome and lumbar disc degeneration.2.Metabolic syndrome will affect the degree of lumbar disc degeneration and nerve root pain in patients.3.The secretion levels of inflammatory cytokines TNF-αand IL-1βin lumbar intervertebral disc were positively correlated with the degree of intervertebral disc degeneration and nerve root pain.
