| Objective:To explore the correlation between fatigue symptoms and personality traits in Parkinson’s disease(PD)based on Cloninger’s three dimensions of personality model. The aim is to find possible interventions to alleviate the symptoms of fatigue in Parkinson’s disease and to raise the awareness of patients and clinicians about the symptoms of fatigue and personality traits changes in PD.In order to help reduce the suffering caused by fatigue symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients with PD.Methods:From October 2022 to February 2023,60 patients diagnosed with PD were collected at the PD Specialized Clinic of the First Hospital of Jilin University. The fatigue severity scale(FSS)was used to assess the fatigue status of all enrolled PD patients,in which a mean score of > 4 on the FSS scale was considered as the presence of fatigue and was classified in the fatigue group(PDF),and a mean score of≤ 4 on the FSS scale was considered as no fatigue and was classified in the non-fatigue group(PDn F).General basic information and clinical data were collected from all enrolled PD patients, including age, gender, education level, disease duration, onset side, and current medication use.Using Unified Parkinson’s disease Rating Scale III(UPDRS III)and Hoehn-Yahr(H-Y)stage,asses motor symptoms in patients with PD.The Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE)assessed patients’ cognitive functional status with PD.The Hamilton Anxiety Scale(HAMA)and Hamilton depression scale(HAMD)were used to assessing patients’ anxiety and depression status, respectively.Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire was applied to assess the personality traits of PD patients, including Novelty seeking(NS),Harm avoidance(HA),and Reward dependence(RD).The scores of the three personality traits were calculated separately as NS,HA,and RD values. We compared the differences in age, sex, education, duration of illness, side of onset,UPDRS III score,H-Y stage,MMSE,anxiety, depression,HAMA score,HAMD score, and tridimensional personality(NS,HA,RD)between the fatigue and non-fatigue groups.Correlations between PD fatigue symptoms(FSS score)and personality traits were assessed to find possible influences on Parkinson’s disease fatigue symptoms.Results:(1)A total of 60 patients diagnosed with PD were studied.Of these 28 cases with fatigue and 32 without, the prevalence of fatigue symptoms was 46.7%.(2)There was no statistical difference(P > 0.05)in the comparison of demographic data(gender, age, education)and general clinical data(side of onset, regularity of medication, duration of illness,UPDRS III score,H-Y stage, depression situation, and MMSE score)between PDF and PDn F.There was a statistical difference(P < 0.001)in the comparison of the HAMA score,HAMD score, and anxiety situation(no anxiety, possible anxiety).(3)PDF had a lower NS value than PFn F,and the difference was statistically significant(P=0.001),and PDF had a significantly higher HA value than PFn F,again with a statistically significant difference(P < 0.001),while in the RD value comparison, the PDF differed from the PDn F,but this difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).(4)NS value was negatively correlated with fatigue(FSS score),HA value was positively and strongly correlated with fatigue(FSS score),and RD value was not correlated with fatigue(FSS score)in the enrolled Parkinson’s disease patients.Conclusion:(1)In patients with Parkinson’s disease, fatigue symptoms have a high prevalence.(2)Parkinson’s disease fatigue patients have low Novelty seeking personality traits and high Harm avoidance.(3)Parkinson’s disease fatigue symptoms correlate with personality traits, and high Harm avoidance may be a potential predictor of the onset of fatigue in Parkinson’s disease. |
