As human beings, experiencing trauma is an inevitable part of life, and the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder ranges from 11%to 40%in individuals who have suffered a natural or man-made disaster.EMDR as a recommended therapy for adults with PTSD has been effective in reducing the suffering of patients. This study has explored the area of EMDR interventions for adults with PTSD and provide a theoretical reference for future research.Although a number of meta-analyses have been conducted on the topic of EMDR interventions for PTSD,there are several shortcomings in the existing studies:(1)most of the existing studies only analyze immediate effects, with few studies focusing on adults and including follow-up data to explore follow-up effects;(2)patients diagnosed with PTSD often have symptoms of anxiety and depression, but few studies have explored whether EMDR has immediate and follow-up effects on anxiety and depression underlying PTSD;(3)existing studies have shown a high level of heterogeneity, but few studies have explored the underlying factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the immediate and follow-up effects of EMDR on PTSD and concomitant anxiety and depression in adults through a meta-analytic approach, using tools such as Revman and Stata, and to investigate whether potential moderators such as type of trauma, type of control group, type of geography, whether early intervention was delivered, and duration of intervention influenced the effect of the intervention with the help of subgroup analysis.A total of 37 papers with 1302 samples were included in this study, and tests of heterogeneity, immediate versus follow-up effect measures and moderating effects were conducted. The results of the study showed that:(1)EMDR has an immediate intervention effect on PTSD in adults, with a significant decrease in follow-up scores compared to immediate scores, and the therapy has a spontaneous and sustained delayed effect that continues to reduce PTSD levels after the course of treatment;(2)EMDR has an immediate intervention effect on anxiety and depression accompanying PTSD in adults, with a decrease in follow-up scores compared to immediate scores but not significant, and roughly maintaining immediate prognostic levels;(3)The immediate effect of EMDR intervention on anxiety accompanying PTSD and the follow-up effect of intervention on PTSD,anxiety, and depression are universally applicable and not affected by moderating factors;(4)Type of control group, type of trauma, type of geography, whether or not to intervene early, and number of interventions had significant moderating effects on the immediate effects of EMDR intervention for PTSD:EMDR therapy was more effective than cognitive-behavioral therapy, treating simple trauma was more effective than complex trauma, early intervention was more effective than non-early intervention, and the number of interventions 1-3 times was the best;the moderating effect of the duration of a single intervention was not significant.(5)Whether early intervention, the number of interventions and the duration of a single intervention had significant moderating effects on the immediate effect of EMDR intervention for depression accompanying PTSD:non-early intervention was more effective than early intervention, the number of interventions 4-6 and 10-12 times was significant, and the duration of a single intervention 60-90 min was the best effect;the moderating effects of control group type, trauma type and geographical type were not significant.
