In recent years, our investment in institutional security projects such as social medical insurance has been increasing continuously, and a multi-level social medical insurance system covering the whole people has been established. With the increasing degree of aging population in China, the intergenerational transfer of family has become the focus of the whole society, which is also an important node of family formation.By compensating for economic losses, social medical insurance reduces the economic threshold of medical treatment for the elderly, improves the hospitalization rate and the consultation rate of the elderly, and plays an important role in protecting the health rights and interests of the elderly and alleviating the pressure of family pension. Can the intervention of social medical insurance affect the intergenerational transfer in the family field? Is it crowding in or crowding out? Based on this, this paper takes social medical insurance as the entry point to analyze its impact on family intergenerational transfer.Based on the cross-sectional data of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey(CLHLS)in 2018,this paper empirically analyzes the impact of social medical insurance on intergenerational family transfer.First of all, this paper studies the two-way intergenerational transfer of families.OLS regression and Probit model are used to construct the basic framework of this study, and the influence of the elderly’s participation in social medical insurance on the direction of intergenerational transfer of families is preliminarily verified.Secondly, this paper uses the method of replacing the model to test the robustness of the basic regression results.Considering the possibility of endogeneity of the samples, the PSM method is used to test again. In addition, this paper uses ADL index, which measures health,as an intermediate variable to verify that social medical insurance affects the intergenerational economic and life care transfer between children and the elderly through affecting the health status of the elderly. Finally, this paper analyzes the heterogeneity of subsamples according to the household registration type, residence region and number of children of the elderly. It is found that in the upward intergenerational transfer of family economic and life care, the participation of the elderly in social medical insurance has a significant crowding in effect, and the intergenerational transfer provided by children to the elderly is mainly manifested as exchange motivation. On the other hand, after the elderly participate in the insurance, they have more ability and time to provide economic and life help to their children, which will squeeze into the downward intergenerational transfer of the family provided by the elderly to their children. The elderly mainly consider the altruistic motive to reduce the pressure of their children’s life.In terms of heterogeneity,in terms of life care transfer, the influence of social health insurance on intergenerational family transfer is more obvious in rural areas, the elderly living in the eastern region and the elderly with a large number of children. In terms of economic transfer, the influence of social medical insurance on family intergenerational transfer is more obvious in urban areas and the old people living in eastern areas. Finally, based on the above results, this paper proposes to further improve the coverage and level of social medical insurance. The actual needs of some vulnerable elderly people should be fully considered, and the social medical insurance resources should be appropriately tilted to the elderly in rural areas, those living in western areas and those with fewer children.
