Purpose:The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of OSA and its characteristics in the general community population, and to analyze the relationship between the five lifestyles of physical exercise, occupational activity, smoking, alcohol and tea consumption and OSA in the Chinese community population. Methods:Community residents from five counties/districts in Shantou and Meizhou,Guangdong were selected for this study using a multi-stage stratified sampling method.A structured questionnaire was used to capture lifestyle information from participants.Questionnaires, physical examination, and fasting blood sample testing were used to obtain information on confounding factors such as general demographics, body parameters, and disease history.Sleep monitoring was performed by a Type Ⅳ sleep monitor, and the oxygen desaturation index(ODI)was used as a diagnostic index for OSA,and ODI≥7.0 events/h was considered as OSA.Odds ratios(OR)with 95%confidence interval(95%CI)were calculated by using the logistic regression method. Results:For all 3620 participants,1111 with OSA,the overall prevalence of OSA was 30.7%,with a higher prevalence in men than in women(45.3%vs.24.4%).After correction for potential confounders, smoking was associated with a lower risk of OSA(OR 0.64,95%CI 0.50-0.82),whereas alcohol and tea consumption, occupational activity of any intensity, and physical activity of any frequency were not associated with the risk of OSA.In stratified analysis, smoking history was associated with a lower risk of OSA in men(OR 0.76,95%CI 0.59-0.96),and this association remained significant after adjust for potential confounders(OR 0.64,95%CI 0.49-0.83).I For female participants, alcohol consumption significantly increased the risk of OSA(OR 1.67,95%CI1.13-2.48),and this association was further enhanced after adjust for confounders(OR 1.85,95%CI 1.23-2.80).Conclusion:In this large community-based population study,we found that the prevalence of OSA was high in general population. And gender difference was found in the impact of lifestyle on OSA.For men, smoking was independently associated with a reduced risk of OSA;For women, alcohol consumption was an independent risk factor for OSA.
