Clinical Application Of A Boot-Shaped Transpalatal Arch For The Correction Of Second Molar Buccal Crossbite

Objective:To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a boot-shaped transpalatal arch for second molar buccal crossbite and to provide a reference for clinical application.Methods:This retrospective study included 12 patients(6 female and 6 male)with second molar buccal crossbite was treated with a boot-shaped transpalatal arch,without the use of bite blocks.Treatment is repeated once a month until the second molar is established in a normal covering relationship.The clinical course and results of the application of this boot-shaped transpalatal arch were recorded and observed during treatment.Cephalometric and model analysis performed before and after treatment.SPSS Statistics 26.0 software was used for statistical analysis.Results:1.After average of 4.2months,all the second molar buccal crossbite was corrected.2.There was no significant change in the width of the maxillary first intermolar before and after correction,and no statistically significant difference between WMU6,WCU6 and LU6 before and after correction(P>0.05).3.The maxillary second intermolar width became significantly shorter after orthodontic treatment,with extremely significant statistical differences before and after orthodontic treatment of WMU7 and WCU7(P<0.001).4.The mandibular plane angle was not changed obviously after correction,and there was no statistically significant difference between PP-MP,SN-MP and U6-PP before and after treatment(P>0.05).Conclusion:The boot-shaped transpalatal arch is particularly effective in the correction of second molar buccal crossbite,which could offer the firm anchorage to clinical work and applicable for clinical popularization.
