Objective To investigate the information of clinical data of 421 patients with chronic osteomyelitis, analyze their clinical characteristics, and provide reference for the prevention and treatment of this disease. Methods Through the hospital electronic medical record system, the information including general information, etiology, risk factors of incidence, etiology, location of osteomyelitis and clinical classification of 421 patients diagnosed with chronic osteomyelitis between January 1,2010 and January 1,2020 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University was collected, and their clinical characteristics were statistically analyzed. Results Among the 421 confirmed cases, the average age was 41.22 years(1month-91 years),the male to female ratio was 2.60:1,and the number of visited patients increased year by year overall, with the peak age of the patients being 31-60 years, and the average age of the patients was slightly higher in women than in men.Occupation was dominated by farmers,students,industry-free personnel and retirees.Osteomyelitis etiology was dominated by exogenous sources, which in turn was mainly traumatic.Common risk factors were,in order, smoking, surgical history, and alcohol consumption. After onset of symptoms,a large proportion of patients were able to seek prompt and effective treatment, with a small proportion delaying treatment timing by up to37 years. The common clinical symptoms were,in turn, pain, purulence, and broken skin. The positive rate of inflammatory indicators: leukocyte 28.37%,erythrocyte sedimentation rate 66.19%,and C-reactive protein 81.92%.The positive culture rate of pathogenic microorganism was 52.25%,and the three most common bacteria in turn were Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The most common sites of infection were the tibia, femur, and calcaneus.According to Cierny-Mader clinical classification, the most common types were IIIA,IVA and IIA.Conclusion The number of patients with chronic osteomyelitis increased year by year, and the group was dominated by young and middle-aged male farmers, and the etiology was dominated by traumatic external causes. The clinical symptoms of the disease were atypical, and smoking and drinking were important risk factors, which should be emphasized and prevented. The fact that the inflammatory indicators of chronic osteomyelitis were not obviously elevated, the culture positive rate of pathogenic microorganisms wss lower, multi drug resistant bacteria were more common, and the clinical classifications were mostly type III and IV,which makes the clinical diagnosis and treatment challenging.
