A Content Analysis Of The Domestic Violence Reports From The Perspective Of Gender

As an important part of society,domestic peace is related to social harmony.Domestic violence not only seriously endangers the physical and mental health of the victims,violates the legitimate rights and interests of the victims,but also is not conducive to social harmony and stability.However,domestic violence is a common social problem all over the world.This article uses gender theory as the theoretical basis,takes the issue of domestic violence as the starting point.The Beijing News app and the Paper app are taken as the research objects,and the keywords of "domestic violence","domestic violence","abuse”and "domestic abuse" are respectively searched in two media above.And all valid articles from June 2019 to June 2020 are screened.This paper makes a content analysis from the time and quantity of domestic violence reports,styles of domestic violence reports,subjects of domestic violence reports,forms of domestic violence reports,themes of domestic violence reports and domestic violence types,describes and explains the content characteristics of domestic violence reports by Beijing News app and the Paper app.The main research questions of this paper are as follows:1.In the issue of domestic violence,what are the characteristics of the two media in terms of reporting time and quantity,reporting styles,reporting forms,reporting subjects,reporting themes and types of domestic violence?What's the difference?2.What are the deep-seated reasons for these features?3.Are there any deficiencies in the coverage of domestic violence by the two media?If there are any deficiencies,how can they be improved?This article analyzes the shortcomings of domestic-violence reports on Beijing News app and the Paper app,and finds that there are three types of female images presented in their reports:1.cowardly and tolerant,not daring to resist.2.take the initiative to resist and be brave to ask for help.3.imperfect victim.The above three female images deeply reflect the stereotypes of women in the media.This form of expression of the media reflects a hegemonic patriarchal ideology,which conceals the essence of domestic violence and the underlying social relations that cause this phenomenon,and focuses on the negative resistance of women in domestic violence,rather than actively analyzing the deep reasons of their tragedies.Media should establish correct gender awareness and objectively present female images.In addition to the stereotypes of female victims,the two media also shows indifference to the victims themselves.They only focus on the domestic violence itself,not the victims.When reporting on domestic violence,they tend to use pictures and videos.Even in order to attract readers'attention,the injured pictures of the victims are put on the news cover to depict the victims' violence in detail.Although pictures and videos can make news more authentic,too detailed description and depiction may cause secondary damage to the victim's psychology.Secondly,the relevant reports do not pay enough attention to the protection of the victims' privacy.The personal information of the victims' address,work,etc.,which has nothing to do with domestic violence,does not affect the readers' reading or understanding of the relevant information,but has also been published in detail.The victim's own pictures are only slightly covered or even not covered.The detailed information about the victims disclosed in these reports may have an impact on the later life of them.This paper analyzes the reasons for the above deficiencies of domestic violence reports,and thinks that the deficiencies are not only affected by the unequal social environment between men and women,but also related to the gender imbalance and status gap in the field of media production and the absence of media ethics of media workers.Finally,from the perspective of society,media organizations,media workers and the public,this paper puts forward some suggestions to improve the coverage of domestic violence.And the limitations of this paper are explained.This article hopes to enrich the research on domestic violence reports under the gender theory and calls on the media to pay more attention to domestic violence issues and vulnerable groups.
