The safety checklist is a tool that helps to prevent medical errors caused by care-providers' ignorance by means of providing essential information at critical points in the clinical process and improving their short-term memory. The smart checklist applies clinical decision support and workflow techniques to make safety checklists patient-specific and process-oriented.Using smart checklists improves the acceptance and adherence to safety checklists in clinical practice.Consequently, implementing smart checklists is the trend in current checklist studies. However, creating smart checklists is difficult, since it involves various types of knowledge including clinical workflow, checklist content, and clinical rules. The variability of knowledge makes current smart checklist knowledge have to be represented in several types of languages and therefor hard to be understand by clinical domain experts. It hinders the widely implementation and application of smart checklists. It remains a challenge how to build a smart checklist knowledge base and computerized system for specific clinical scenarios conveniently. This thesis contributes a set of visualized editing approaches and a tool for smart checklists.By using this tool, domain experts created checklist knowledge base and system for two typical clinical scenarios. The results indicate the proposed approach helps with implementing smart checklists in clinical practice.Details of this thesis are as follows:I)The knowledge components in smart checklists were analyze.Current knowledge representation mechanisms and tools for each component of the smart checklist were reviewed and their limitations were investigated.Based on the review,we chose proper visualized format and extended a current clinical rule language.2)Requirements for smart checklist visualized editor were analyzed and a visualized editor that can edit, manage, and maintain smart checklist was developed consequently.3)Approaches for building smart checklist were studied.By using the visualized editor, the PCI peri-operative smart checklist and stroke daily care smart checklist had been developed based on observation and clinical guidelines.4)By applying the knowledge, smart checklist systems for PCI peri-operative process and stroke daily care had been developed, respectively. The evaluations show that the systems can meet the clinical requirements in both scenarios.
