The Construction And Presentation Of News Events

A violent crime broke out in URUMQI, China on July 5th,2009. A policeman and a lot of innocent people were killed by offenders. Some people and policemen were injured. The event causes extensive damage. It attracted highly attention of media from all over the world. "Urumqi Riots" was so remarkable that the media had to report day after day.This article focuses on media coverage on "Urumqi Riots" in the people's daily which is the most representative paper in china. With studying,156 news articles were analyzed to show what innate character the news is, how the press constructs Urumqi Riots and what way the report present this event in.The introduction references the thought of Structuralism Semiotics. We analyzed innate character of the news event:it was selected, symbolized by the reporter, and then was constructed into a symbol world.The first chapter introduces about the Frame Analysis. We learn the frame hierarchy from Taiwan scholars Zang Guoren and use this method in the analysis of how Urumqi Riots constructed by the People's Daily respectively from the high-level structure frame and the hierarchical structure frame.The second chapter introduces about Discourse Analysis, especially the Theoretical framework of Van·Dijk to research the text of Urumqi Riots. We expect to clarify text features from microcosmic level in Discourse Analysis method.Myths rhetoric theory of French scholars Roland·barthes gives us a big inspiration in the third chapters. Study in macro and micro levels of these reports in previous chapters helps us know the first and the second level of meaning about Urumqi Riots.
