ObjectiveTo investigate if 3 times of massage combined with milli-fire needle improved pain, quality of life, disability and shell temperature vs massage in myofasciitis of the lower back patients and to determine if changes were sustained during a week washout period.MethodsRandomization(1:1)to 3 times of massage or massage combined with milli-fire needle. The primary outcome was change in the Visual Pain Analogue Scale(VAS)from baseline to after and one week after treatment.Secondary analyses were Health status questionnaire(SF-36)and Oswestry Disability Index(ODI).The temperature difference were observed by infrared thermal imager before and after one week of treatment.Result1.VAS results showed that: the VAS scores in both groups were significantly lower after treatment than before treatment(P<0.01);The scores of the massage combined with the needle group were lower than that of the massage group, with statistical significance(P<0.01).After 1 week of treatment, the VAS score of the two groups was still lower than that before treatment, with statistical significance(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the score of the test group was lower than that of the control group, with statistical significance(P<0.01).2.The results of the SF-36 showed that: the experimental group could improve overall health(4 scales)after treatment and 1 week after treatment, while the control group could only improve 3 scales(Physical Functioning(PF),Role-Physical(RP),Body Pain(BP)).In terms of mental health,Vitality(VT),Mental Health(MH)were improved in the experimental group after treatment and 1 week after treatment, and Role-Emotional(RE)was improved in the massage group after 1 week of treatment. After treatment,Physical Functioning(PF)and physiological function of Role-Physical(RP)in the experimental group were significantly improved compared with the control group, with statistical difference(P<0.05).After 1 week of treatment,Vitality(VT),Social Functioning(SF)and Role-Emotional(RE)of the experimental group were significantly improved compared with the control group(P<0.05).3.Oswestry Disability Index(ODI)showed that the scores of the two groups were significantly lower than those before treatment(P<0.01),after treatment, but there was no significant difference between the two groups. After a week of treatment, the score of the two groups was lower than that before treatment, with statistical significance(P<0.01),and the score of the test group was lower than that of the treatment group, with statistical difference(P<0.05).4.Infrared thermal imaging results showed that: one week after treatment and before treatment, massage group temperature difference has no significant difference(P<0.05),while the treatment group in one week after treatment than before treatment temperature difference has significantly reduced(P <0.05).Compared with the control group, the temperature difference in the treatment group was significantly decreased, with statistical significance(P<0.05).ConclusionBoth massage therapy and massage combined with milli-fire needle therapy could significantly improve the pain(VAS)and lumbar function(ODI)of myofasciitis. But in the experimental group, the immediate treatment and the aftereffects on analgesia and the improvement of lumbar function were more significant than that of simple massage. Both groups showed improvement in physical health after treatment, and the experimental group showed partial improvement in mental health. The mental health improvement of the experimental group was better than that of the massage group after one week of treatment. And massage combined with needle can significantly reduce the local temperature difference between the back and waist.Infrared thermal imaging may be used as a reference index to reflect the growth and regression of inflammation, but the interpretation of its temperature needs to be more diverse. In conclusion, the combination of massage and needle therapy is an effective, inexpensive, and less invasive treatment for the improvement of pain, lumbar function, and quality of life in mild myofasciitis.
