Research On English Translation Of Gynecological Terms In TCM From The Perspective Of Conceptual Metaphor

This study is based on the following standards: International Standard Chinese-English Basic Nomenclature of Chinese Medicine(2008),WHO International Standard Terminologies on Traditional Medicine in The Western Pacific Region(2007)and Terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Internal Medicine,Gynecology and Pediatrics(2010).These three standards have the characteristics of high authority and wide dissemination at home and abroad.From the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory,the author traces the formation of term metaphor phenomenon,and makes a theoretical discussion on which translation principles and methods should be adopted in the process of translating the terms with metaphor phenomenon to achieve the best translation effect.The research mainly adopts literature research method and statistical analysis method.The methods of search tools and references is used to collect the relevant literature of metaphor and English translation at home and abroad.The computer is used to sort out and classify the collected literature,clarify the research content in this field.The study uses the three TCM terminology standards as the corpus,and statistically quantifies the TCM gynecology terms and their English translations in the three TCM terminology standards,and conducts a qualitative analysis of TCM gynecology terminology based on conceptual metaphor theory.Based on the structural metaphor,orientation metaphor and ontological metaphor(container metaphor,pipeline metaphor and personification)in conceptual metaphor,this study analyzes the connotation and translation effect of terms,and discusses the principles and methods of metaphor translation of TCM gynecology terms.According to the definition and characteristics of conceptual metaphor theory,this research finds the gynecology terms of TCM which has conceptual metaphor phenomenon,and obtains 73 cases of term metaphor paradigm in the three English translation standards of TCM terms,including 26 cases of metaphor paradigm based on structural metaphor,13 cases of metaphor paradigm based on orientation metaphor,and 34 cases of metaphor paradigm based on ontological metaphor.Due to differences in the English translation of the same gynecological terms in the three standards,there are a total of 140 English translation of gynecological terms,of which 45 cases use the literal translation,accounting for 32.14%;67 cases use the free translation,accounting for 47.6%;27 cases are from western medicine terms,accounting for 19.29%;and 1 case is use transliteration,accounting for 0.71%.It can be seen that literal translation and free translation are the main translation methods of metaphorical terms in gynecology of TCM.However,the literal translation and free translation cannot explain the meaning well of some terms.Therefore,it is not necessary to translate literal or free translation deliberately.Transliteration and interpretation can be adopted to preserve the unique connotation of the terms.In order to explore the best translation of metaphor terms,this study analyzes the causes,connotation,different English translations and translation methods of metaphor terms in three TCM terms standards,which is conducive to the standardization of TCM gynecology terms translation and the international communication and dissemination of TCM.
