The progressive period was a pivotal period in American history,during which the United States rapidly transformed from a traditional agricultural and commercial society into the world’s leading industrialized country.With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization,large Numbers of people gather in cities.But the city public health facilities lag behind,the modern health concept and system has not been established,these two produce a great contradiction.In this context,tuberculosis(TB)as an infectious disease broke out in American cities on a large scale.Because TB is a chronic disease,early government efforts to combat the disease did not have a significant effect,causing resentment among all groups.The American people in the social transition are actively seeking to participate in public affairs.The tuberculosis outbreak at this time gave Americans the opportunity to participate in public activities.This paper is to explore how different groups of urban society can participate in and express their appeals in the national campaign against tuberculosis.This multi-body anti-tuberculosis campaign has created a new model of urban public health governance,including the cooperation between doctors and non-professionals,voluntary associations and public health institutions.In addition,this movement is of positive significance to the expansion of social welfare in the United States and the realization of the pluralistic co-governance in urban public affairs.The American public’s pursuit of order and scientific knowledge in the anti-tuberculosis movement typified the zeitgeist of the progressive era. |
