| The continued low level of fertility and the steady increase in the average life expectancy of the population have made the situation of population aging in this century more prominent in our country. The health of the elderly population has been widely concerned, especially the special groups of the elderly population such as living alone, disabled, and empty. The health status of the elderly in nests and those who have lost their independence has received great attention.Compared with the general elderly, the empty-nest elderly are more likely to be exposed to various risks and are more vulnerable.Paying attention to and solving the health problems of the empty-nest elderly is not only related to their own well-being and life at the micro level.Quality,at the macro level,is of great significance to the smooth implementation of the country’s active aging and healthy aging strategy.Based on this, this article empirically analyzes the impact of empty nests on the physical and mental health of the elderly by combing the literature on the basis of relevant theories, rationally explaining and explaining the results of the model analysis, and putting forward corresponding policy recommendations for the problems. This paper uses the data from the Fourth China Urban and Rural Elderly Living Conditions Sample Survey in Jilin Province, focusing on the special group of empty-nest elderly people, and empirically analyzes the impact of empty-nest elderly in Jilin Province on health. In the setting of dependent variables, two variables,self-care ability in daily life(ADL)and subjective well-being are selected for measurement, and both are set as binary variables. The core explanatory variable is whether the elderly are empty-nested.The empty-nested elderly are defined as those who live alone or only with their spouses, and the elderly who live with children and other people are non-empty-nested elderly.Based on the content of the questionnaire, corresponding variables were selected as control variables and included in the model from several levels such as demographic factors, socioeconomic factors, personal behavior factors, social activity factors, and family factors. In the part of the empirical analysis of the impact of empty nests on the self-care ability of the elderly, considering that the independent variable and the dependent variable may be causal to each other, the model has endogenous problems, and the instrumental variable method(IV)and two-stage least squares are adopted.Regression(2SLS)for model estimation.Combining theory to explore the difference in the impact of the empty nest status of the elderly in Jilin Province on the subjective well-being of the elderly with different household registrations and whether participation in social activities has a significant impact on the health of the elderly. The conclusions of the empirical analysis mainly include the following three points:First, the empty nest situation of the elderly in Jilin Province does not have a significant impact on their daily self-care ability, but it has a significant negative impact on the subjective well-being of the elderly;Second, participating in social activities has a certain promotion effect on the maintenance of the elderly’s daily life self-care ability and the improvement of subjective well-being,which verifies the activity theory to a certain extent;Third, the status of empty nests of elderly people with different household registrations in Jilin Province has different effects on their subjective well-being.Empty nests have a significant impact on the subjective well-being of the elderly with household registration in rural areas, but have no significant effect on the subjective well-being of the elderly with household registration in urban areas. The above reflects the difference in the intensity of formal support and informal support received by the elderly in urban and rural areas. This article combines relevant theories to rationally explain the research results, identify the health problems of the empty-nest elderly, and propose corresponding policy recommendations from the government, the community, and the elderly individuals to improve the empty-nest elderly in Jilin Province. The health status of this population will improve the well-being of this population and promote the smooth implementation of the country’s active aging and healthy aging strategy. |
