Objective: To study the expression of stroma cell-derived factor-1(SDF-1)and its receptor(C-X-C chemokine receptor 4,CXCR4))in fibroblasts of pterygium and its significance. Methods: Primary pterygium and normal conjunctival tissue were cultured and divided into 4 groups according to age> 50 years old and ≤50 years old.Pterygium group A: age≤50 years old group, group B: age>50 years old group.Normal conjunctiva group: C group:age ≤50 years old;D group: age > 50 years old.The expression of SDF-1 and its receptor CXCR4 in pterygium fibroblasts and normal conjunctival fibroblasts from patients with different ages were detected by immunofluorescence staining,Western-blot ELISA and real-time quantitative PCR,and their significance was analyzed. Results: In normal conjunctival fibroblasts, the m RNA expressions of SDF-1 and CXCR4 in group C were not significantly different from those in group D(P > 0.05).In pterygium fibroblasts, the protein and m RNA expressions of SDF-1 and CXCR4 in group≤50 years old were higher than those in group > 50 years old(P < 0.05).Conclusion: SDF-1/CXCR4 may be involved in the occurrence and development of pterygium, and it may be related to the high recurrence of pterygium in people under 50 years old.The inhibition or down-regulation of SDF-1/CXCR4 expression may be a new target for the prevention of pterygium recurrence.
