Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate female adults’ acceptance among labial orthodontics, clear aligners and lingual orthodontics, and to investigate their association with personality traits. Methods: 150 female adult patients aged 20-39 were divided into three groups(50 labial,50 clear aligners and 50 lingual).Participants were asked to fill questionnaires 4-6 months after wearing orthodontic appliances.Orthodontic Appliance Acceptance Questionnaire was used to assess the patients’ subjective adaption and compliance.Clinical Compliance Evaluation Questionnaire was used to assess the patients’ objective compliance.Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the Neuroticism Extroversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory and Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale were used to assess the personality traits.One-Way ANOVA,Pearson correlation coefficient and Spearman rank correlation were used to analysis the difference of acceptance among the three orthodontic appliances and their association with personality traits. Results: Female adults had better adaption to the labial orthodontics and clear aligners than the lingual orthodontics, with the scores of 32.78±8.41,33.29±7.70 and 38.43±11.15 respectively(P<0.01).The subjective compliance of the patients who were treated with clear aligners was poorer than those of the labial orthodontics and the lingual orthodontics, with the scores of 5.29±2.27,3.42±1.25 and 3.67±1.60 respectively(P<0.01),while the objective compliance of the patients who were treated with clear aligners was better than those of the labial orthodontics and the lingual orthodontics, with the scores of 4.15±2.37,5.37±2.38 and 6.52±2.06 respectively(P<0.01).The Extroversion/Introversion score of the labial patients(52.30±9.16)was significantly lower than that of the lingual patients(57.65±8.62,P<0.05).The Personal Standards score of the clear aligner group was significantly higher than those of the labial and lingual groups, with the scores of 18.50±4.35,16.18±4.54 and 16.75±4.72 respectively(P<0.05).The Negative Perfectionism score and total Perfectionism score of the clear aligner group(56.38±10.55 and 79.76±11.09)were significantly higher than those of the labial group(50.58±12.40 and 73.34±12.21,P<0.05).Extroversion/Introversion,Neuroticism,Organization,Negative Perfectionism and total Perfectionism showed significant correlations to the adaption.Neuroticism,Concern over Mistakes,Personal Standards and Doubts about Actions showed significant correlations to the compliance. Conclusion: Female adults showed better adaption to labial fixed orthodontic appliances and clear aligners than the lingual fixed orthodontic appliances. They also showed better compliance to clear aligners than the labial and lingual orthodontic appliances.Lingual orthodontic patients were more extrovert than the labial orthodontic patients. The clear aligner patients had higher demands on themselves than the labial and lingual orthodontic patients. The clear aligner patients showed more tendency of negative perfectionism and were more perfectionists than the labial patients. There were associations between personality traits and patients’ adaption and compliance to orthodontic appliances. These results suggest that clinicians should pay more attention to the acceptance of female adults when considering orthodontic treatment using different orthodontic appliances.Personality traits could be a useful prediction to assess the adaption and compliance to orthodontic appliances.
