Objective To investigate effect of preoperative chewing gum on postoperative rehabilitation in patients undergoing radical resection of lung cancer. Methods Ninety patients, between 18~65 years old,and ASAⅠ~Ⅲ grade, undergoing selective radical resection of lung cancer with double-lumen tube were enrolled in this study.Patients were divided into experimental group(G group)and control group(C group)according to the method of random number table.Forty-five patients in each group.Patients in G group chewed gum for two minutes before operation, while patients in C group swallowed for two times.Relative factors of intubate, postoperative incidence of sore throat and hoarseness were compared,as well as the recovery of gastrointestinal function, and incidence of nausea and vomiting. Results There were no significant differences of age, ratio of sex, height and weight, and ASA grade between two groups(P>0.05).There were no significant differences of operation time, anesthesia time, bleeding and transfusion volume, intraoperative consumption of sufentanil and remifentanil as well as propofol, postoperative consumption sufentanil(P>0.05).There were no significant differences of CormackLehane grade, intubation times, intubation resistance, intubation time,double-lumen tube positioning time,double-lumen tube re-positioning times,one-lung ventilation time and double-lumen tube retention time(P>0.05).Compared to C group, the incidence of sore throat and hoarseness decreased at 1 hour,6 hours and 24 hours after operation, and the VAS of sore throat decreased significantly(P < 0.05) in G group.Time of first exhaust and defecation and time of first water and food intake in G group were significant shorter than those in C group(P<0.05).Compared to C group, incidences of nausea and vomiting in G group were significant lower in G group(P<0.05).Conclusion Preoperative chewing gum can alleviate postoperative sore throat and hoarseness in patients undergoing radical resection of lung cancer with double-lumen tube, enhance recovery of gastrointestinal function, reduce incidence of nausea and vomiting and reduce hospital stays, and improve postoperative rehabilitation ultimately.
