ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to construct a continuing education syllabus for clinical nurses’ coping with death,which aligns with the clinical situation and systematic and scientific characteristics.The Hierarchical Model of Death Competence guides the construction process,and this study can provide a theoretical basis for the continuing education of clinical nurses’ coping with death.Methods1.Preparation of the draft of the continuing education syllabus for clinical nurses’coping with death competence.This chapter consists of three parts:A face-to-face interview method was used to summarize the challenges and needs of clinical nurses in coping with death,through the systematic synthesis of the qualitative research on the expectation of a good death for end-stage patients.The cognitive ability,emotional ability and behavioral ability in the process of coping with death were explored through content analysis,and the first draft of the syllabus for continuing education of clinical nurses’ coping with death competence was developed.2.Delphi expert correspondence method for continuing education syllabus of clinical nurses’ coping with death competence.Representative and authoritative expert professors were invited to participate in two rounds of Delphi expert consultation.The syllabus for continuing education of clinical nurses’ coping with death competence was finally established.Results1.A qualitative study of the challenges and needs of clinical nurses in responding to death-related issues.Qualitative research has extracted three major themes:cognitive level,emotional level,and skill level;12 sub-theme:lack of value of life,has yet to establish the proper view of death,desire to know about organ donation of the patient,and respect the funeral culture of patients,moral dilemmas,negative emotions,emotional exhaustion,job burnout,the lack of hospice care ability,to the death care is absent,the lack of grief counseling skills,the limitations of communication and coordination ability.2.A total of 14 studies were finally included.52 results were extracted,and then 4 synthesized results were summarized from the 10 categories.The integrated results range from physiological needs(physiological needs at the end-stage,physiological needs at the time of death),psychological needs(desire fulfillment,positive psychology),spiritual needs(religious belief,maintenance of dignity,other spiritual needs),to the needs of society(interpersonal,economic,support systems).3.A total of 35 pieces of literature were included for content analysis,and 39-course objectives were summarized;The course content consists of 3 modules,13 first-level titles,and 42 second-level titles.It is primarily concerned with the perception of life and death;Effectively managing the emotional challenges of death-related events.4.In this chapter,a total of 16 experts participated in the Delphi expert consultation,and the expert authority coefficient was 0.83,indicating that the experts in this letter consultation were representative and authoritative.The coordination coefficients of course objectives and course contents in the second round were 0.235(P<0.001)and 0.138(P<0.001).There are altogether 18-course objectives,10 first-level titles,and 57 second-level titles.The course objectives and content’s importance degree are more significant 3.5,indicating that course objectives and content items are relatively important.Conclusion1.Clinical nurses have weaknesses in understanding the meaning of life and death,coping with negative emotions caused by death-related events,and providing excellent death services,etc.Their ability to cope with death needs to be further improved.2.Expectations and needs of end-stage patients on a good death include physical,psychological,spiritual,and social aspects,reminding nurses that the end-stage patients’ demands on a good death are comprehensive,individualized,and run through the end-stage patients.3.Our syllabus can provide a theoretical basis for continuing education of nurses’coping with death.
