Background & Objective Sleep takes part in the regulation of metabolic activities of body. However, adolescents are widely faced with lack of sleep and all kinds of sleep disorders. This study is aimed at exploring the correlation between sleep condition and glucose metabolism as well as insulin resistance among normal-weight Chinese adolescents and discussing the potential mechanism.MethodsBased on the Chinese Metabolic Syndrome Study, this study included 412 male and 317 female adolescents with the age ranging from 12 to 18 years into cross-section analysis applying SPSS 21.0.Factor correlation analysis was carried out using cross-tab p-chi-square test, logistic regression and linear regression. In addition,age-specific curve estimation between glucose/insulin/insulin resistance indexes and sleep duration was also conducted on the basis of quadratic model.P<0.05 was set as the significant level.ResultsInsufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality among male adolescents led to the remarkable rise of the incidence of impaired glucose tolerance along with the decrease of insulin resistance.Few significant results existed in females after adjusting.Cross-function results showed that the concurrent combination of short sleep duration along with poor sleep quality might pose more obvious negative effects on glucose metabolism than any single index. The tendency analysis results indicated that sleep condition had different influence on adolescents of different ages.Adipose cytokines could influence insulin incretion.Insufficient sleep duration could lead to lower level of growth hormones and sex hormones, higher level of insulin and finally weakened insulin resistance.ConclusionsPoor sleep quality and insufficient sleep duration could both lead to the increase of glucose tolerance impairment in male adolescents.Adipose cytokines, growth hormones and sex hormones might be important factors that affect the correlation between sleep and glucose metabolism as well as insulin resistance among adolescents of different ages.Related mechanism remains to be further discovered.
