In recent years,non-thermal plasmas(NTPs)have been successfully used as an efficient and flexible tool to directly convert liquid ethanol into a high-value energy carrier under mild or even near room temperature conditions. In order to develop and optimize NTP based applications,a better understanding of the basic physical properties of liquid ethanol discharge is needed. In this paper, the discharge characteristics of liquid ethanol converted by plasma under different process parameters were studied and the general trend of discharge behavior was revealed. There are two discharge modes of liquid discharge,self-pulse discharge and direct current discharge. These two modes are easy to transfer and flexible to control by adjusting process parameters. In addition, the bubble behavior during discharge plays an important role in the transition between discharge modes.DC mode is observed when the discharge continues due to the diffusion and floating of bubbles.Otherwise, the discharge develops into pulse mode. Then, the gas phase product was detected and studied. The results showed that the gas production rate and product composition also depended on the discharge mode, and the mechanism of the gas phase product was analyzed in combination with the above. Finally, the optimal scheme of converting ethanol to hydrogen by plasma is designed, and the discharge characteristics of the new scheme and the original scheme are compared in detail, and the future work is planned and prospected.
