Seventeen subjects participating in this diet study were assigned to a low-carbohydrate diet (the Protein Power Plan) or a low-fat, high-fiber diet. Each subject was given a customized diet plan and tested before and after the four-week period. Body composition values tested included body fat, fat free mass and total body water. Lipid values were tested along with resting metabolic rate for each subject pre and post dietary intervention. Many low-carbohydrate advocates claim that high carbohydrate diets are the cause of obesity and health problems, but results of this study indicated that subjects on the low-fat, high-fiber diet plan were just as successful at losing total body weight and fat weight without a significant loss of lean tissue. Additionally, this easy to follow, balanced eating plan contributed to improvements in total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. |
