Abstract/Summary:
IT infrastructure in healthcare institutions constitutes only a small part of the total infrastructure, which limits the use of electronic medical records (EMR) in some clinics restricting the understanding of the benefits that EMR has to offer to patients. Some of the commonly cited reasons for limited use of EMR include lack of resources, and resistance from key stakeholders such as patients, nurses and physicians. This research explores the reasons behind this low level of usage of EMR, and investigates the potential effects of a particular information infrastructure on the level of patient satisfaction. Data was collected using online survey and personal interviews from eighteen health professionals. The interviewees were working in nine different clinics and hospital settings, and were providing health services to patients with chronic diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. The contribution of this research is a revised model of EMR adoption among health professionals in organizations providing patient care. The revised model generated by this research aims to provide focus areas for healthcare facilities which can be emphasized for better EMR adoption.
