Abstract/Summary:
This study explores the perceptions of the effect of the values of Islamic movements on social integration held by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and other Muslims and Christian intellectuals who have been studying this effect. This study suggests steps for both the Muslim Brotherhood and Coptic Christians to take to improve their integration together. These steps involve moving from self-centered to socially-focused concerns and motives. It is also necessary to move from caring about the religious aspect of values to civic ones and to move from focusing on their private identities to collective social identities. Subordinating parties own private culture to the mainstream cultural context. In addition, the Muslim Brotherhood needs to recall historical memories and symbols that could encourage the process of integration, instead of recalling historical events and symbols that encourage the superiority of one party over others.
