Now science, technology and society are becoming more and more integrated, and the rapid development of the knowledge economy has put forward higher requirements for innovation.Innovation has become the main driving force for technology and social development. The development of world should rely on the efforts of the multi-lateral cooperation. In this context, the innovation of cooperation between industry, universities and research institutes has become the unanimous choice of all countries in the world. In China, the cooperation between industry, university and research has become an important driving force for enhancing independent innovation capabilities and international competitiveness, promoting interactive development between science and technology and building a national innovation system, which has been promoted to a national strategic height. The academic community has also conducted extensive research on the cooperation between production, education and research, but the research on the formation mechanism still needs to be strengthened. In order to improve the research on the formation mechanism of the cooperative relationship between industry, universities, and research in China.Combining the existing research, the paper analyzes the mechanism of the cooperative relationship between industry, universities and research from the aspects of geographical distance, cognitive distance and social distance.According to the sample data of joint patents issued by twelve "985 Engineering" universities and enterprises,a measure index of geographic distance, cognitive distance and social distance was constructed. We use the Probit model to conduct empirical tests on theoretical analysis. The research conclusions are as follows:Firstly, the degree of conformity and complementary advantages of inter-agency tacit knowledge is a determinant of school-enterprise cooperation.Cognitive distance has a direct impact on the possibility of setting up cooperation between industries, universities. Moreover, the influence of cognitive distance on the possibility of cooperation between production, education.and research shows an inverse U-shape.In particular, the influence of cognitive distance on the probability of cooperation exists independently of social distance.Secondly, the proximity of geographic distances can indeed increase the probability of cooperation between industry, universities, and research institutes. However, this is not a direct effect of geographical distance, but rather an indirect effect through the influence of social distance. Moreover, the geographical distance effect of cooperation between universities, universities, and universities varies with social distance. The influence of geographical distance and social distance on the cooperation between industry, universities.and research institutions is complementary.Third,to strengthen the social connections between universities and enterprises and to shorten the social distance between them will help increase the probability of cooperation between production, education and research. Therefore, the paper provides new evidence for a more comprehensive understanding of the formation mechanism of the cooperative relationship between industry, universities and research institutes, and also provides a new reference for national innovation-driven development strategy.
