Objective:To compare the clinical features and surgical results between cardiac myxomas in Carney complex and sporadic cardiac myxomas, and to provide the treatment experience for Carney complex patients with cardiac myxomas. Methods:We retrospectively analyzed 574 patients receiving surgical resections of cardiac myxomas in our center between January 2003 and December 2013,of which 10 patients were diagnosed with Carney complex. There were 2 male(20%)and 8 female(80%).The mean age was 32.90 ± 14.37 years(range:14.00-57.00 years).8 patients(80%)had spotty skin pigmentations with typical distribution,7 patients(70%)had an affected parent,4 patients(40%)had the previous histories of cardiac myxoma resections.Associated cardiac lesions included moderate and severe mitral regurgitation in two, tricuspid regurgitation in one.The mean follow-up duration was 104.70±41.02 months(range,54-169 months). The age, gender, the rate of arterial embolism, the multiple rate of cardiac myxomas and the recurrence rate after cardiac myxoma resections were compared between sporadic cardiac myxomas and cardiac myxomas in Carney complex. Results:The incidence of cardiac myxoma in Carney Complex among total cardiac myxomas was 1.74%.The most common original site was the left atrium. There was no early death after operation. The mean survival time was 156.63 ± 11.58 months. There was one late death due to cerebral embolism 40 months after the second time of operation(10%).There was a significant difference in the age,the rate of arterial embolism, the multiple rate of cardiac myxomas and the recurrence rate after cardiac myxoma resection between cardiac myxoma in Carney Complex and sporadic cardiac myxoma(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the gender between the two(P>0.05).Conclusions:Based on our experience, surgical resection of cardiac myxoma in Carney Complex results in good clinical outcomes. The clinical features of cardiac myxomas in Carney complex included that CNC cardiac myxomas present in the earlier age with a higher rate of arterial embolism and present in multiple lesions more often compared to sporadic cardiac myxoma. For CNC patients with cardiac myxoma, surgical removal is recommended as soon as possible given risk of the higher rate of embolism, and surgical resection needs to be performed more carefully and completely.Long-term follow up is required after surgery.
