The powder of coconut shell activated carbon is a by-product in the production process of activated carbon.The powder of coconut shell activated carbon is often abandoned as a waste,which causes waste of resources.In the paper,the preparation of columnar activated carbon from the powder of peanut shell activated carbon was studied.Three kinds of binders i.e.water glass-refractory mud,phenolic resin and petroleum asphalt were used to prepare columnar activated carbon.The influences of the binder amount,carbonization and activation temperature,time on the adsorption behavior of iodine,strength and yields of activated carbon were investigated.The results are as follows:(1)The water glass-refractory mud had poor adhesion,and produced a large amount of ash.The phenolic resin was decomposed at high temperature and lost the stickiness.The asphalt had the best bonding strength and high residue carbon after carbonization.The resultant column carbon using asphalt binder has the highest strength of 210 N.(2)The influences of carbonization temperature and time on the strength and yields were investigated.It showed that the strength of column carbon increased with the carbonization temperature but the yield decreased.The optimal carbonization temperature and time were 600? for 60 min.(3)The influence of activation temperature and time,activation agent on the iodine adsorption,strength and yields of activated carbon were investigated.The activated carbon prepared by activation at 800? for 2.5h in steam showed an iodine adsorption of 491 mg/g and a strength of 95 N.(4)The adsorption capacity of column activated carbon for Pb2+ in aqueous solution was tested using static absorption experiment.The results showed that mesoporosity and the adsorption time affected the adsorption of Pb2+ in aqueous solution.When the mesoporosity was 93%and the adsorption time was 160 min,the adsorption amount of Pb2+ reached 15.0 mg/g.The column activated carbon derived from the coconut shell activated carbon powder can be used for the adsorption of Pb2+in aqueous solution.
