CFS(continuous flash suppression)is an important tool developed in recent years for investigating visual processing outside of awareness. In a CFS paradigm,a series of different Mondrian patterns called mask is flashed to one eye at a steady rate, suppressing awareness of the image(called target)presented to the other eye.Exploring the factors which affect the inhibition of CFS has always been a hot issue.Previous studies have found that the inhibitory effect of CFS is closely related to the properties of mask and target. However, whether the alignment between mask and target will affect the suppression effect of CFS is still inconclusive. Therefore, this paper studies the alignment in CFS by designing different masks and targets. We rearch whether the mask's inhibitory effect on the target under consciousness is stronger when the same property of mask and target is consistentWe discuss three factors of alignment on the effectiveness:1.the alignment of orientation,2.the alignment of color,3.the interaction of color and orientation. We designed a color Mondrian model mask with basic and oblique orientation to suppress the"+"and"×"graphics in the experimentl. We verified that the orientation consistency has an effect on CFS;We also designed the masks containing both color and orientation to suppress the targets with both orientation and color. We find that color consistency and the interaction of color and orientation have an effect on the effect of CFSThrough the analysis of the experimental data,We found that the more consistent the orientation of the mask image and the target image, the stronger the suppression effect of CFS.And the color doesn't produce significant impact in this paper. In terms of the interaction,we find the effect of alignment in orientation significant when the mask image and target image have same color, however the effect is not significant even disappeared when the color is different. We conclude that the alignment of the attributes between the target and the mask does have a significant impact on the final CFS suppression through the above results. On the one hand, the research of this paper further deepens the exploration of the underlying neural mechanism of CFS,and promotes the research on the cognitive process under"consciousness";on the other hand, our research results have important methodological implications on the better apply of the CFS paradigm for visual awareness.Because of our results, the researcher can clearly understand the relationship between mask, target and experimental tasks with CFS in the future. So they can control the design of mask and target better to achieve the research purpose and expected experimental results.
