Ship detection plays an important role in the field of marine surveillance applications, such as fisheries management, search and rescue of vessels, and pollution monitoring. The synthetic aperture radar(SAR),due to the ability to image through cloud cover and independence of illumination, together with a fine spatial resolution, has become the key remote sensing tool to observe metallic targets at sea. With the development of sensor techniques, advanced polarimetric SAR(Pol-SAR)systems,which contain multiple channels, provide a more complete description of target scattering behavior than traditional single-channel SAR systems, such as HH,HV,VH and VV.Therefore, ship detection using Pol-SAR data has drawn much attention in recent years.Among the abundant information in Pol-SAR data, the scattering mechanism characteristic of the target is one of the most important, which has a great significance in the detection of ship targets at sea.For this reason, the following studies were carried out in this paper:1)It is the scattering similarity parameters that are used to analyze the scattering mechanism characteristics of ship targets and sea surface in polarimetric SAR data, rather than the traditional polarization decomposition methods which have a complex calculation process,so the efficiency of the algorithm is improved;2)Based on the differences of scattering mechanism between the ship targets and sea surface,a novel ship target detection metric is proposed, which enhances the contrast between ship and sea effectively;3)The distribution function of the proposed metric is investigated and modeled by utilizing the method of kernel density estimation(KDE).Based on the statistical model,an automatic constant false alarm rate(CFAR)detection scheme is implemented. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed modeling method and the detection performance of the detection metric, two C-band full-polarization SAR data is adopted in this paper, the experimental results of the two data all demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed metric and the model estimation method.
