In the field of art criticism mainly in Europe and the United States,avant-garde art and modernist art are often regarded as the same art genre. This situation changed a lot after the publication of the “Avant-garde Theory” by German avant-garde theorist Peter Bürger and “After the Great Divide: Modernism,Mass Culture,Postmodernism” by American art critic Huyssen. The avant-garde art discussed in this article mainly refers to the historical avant-garde,also called early avant-garde,which was introduced by Bürger in 1920 and appeared in Dadaism and Surrealism around 1920.As the representative, art schools that oppose art self-discipline,advocate intervention in life, and have extreme rebellious spirit. The "modernist art" mainly refers to the artistic genre that emerged from the modern era, represented by aestheticism, which advocates artistic self-discipline and negates the tradition. In fact,avant-garde art is very different from modernist art.Although both are the products of modernity, they still have different philosophical foundations and inherent characteristics in the context of aesthetic modernity. Therefore, this article will analyze and compare avant-garde art and modernist art from three parts.First,in terms of the relationship between art and life,avant-garde art advocates the connection between art and daily life, and believes that art exists everywhere in life.Modernist art stands on the opposite side of daily life, advocating artistic self-discipline;secondly,in terms of anti-art,avant-garde art opposes art itself, and even moves towards a suicide-style rebellion.Modernist art is opposed to traditional art forms and languages, and expects to create new art by changing traditional arts. Finally,in terms of artistic media as objects,avant-garde art always highlights the physical characteristics of artistic media, and in modern times The artistic medium in the art of art is quietly invisible. On the basis of reading and analyzing classic texts, this article systematically summarizes and organizes in order to distinguish the differences between avant-garde art and modernist art,and to provide a new perspective or reference for the study of art theory.
