A Study On The "G(?)n Jué"-like Epistemic Stance Markers

Stance marker is a special linguistic phenomenon in which authors and speakers express their personal opinions and attitudes.It plays a very important role in discourse construction and interpersonal communication.According to the corpus investigation,some psychological verbs have gradually become pragmatic and subjective,such as "g(?)n jué"(??),"jué de"(??),"ren wei"(??),"yi wei"(??)and "gu ji"(??),standing as stance markers.They show functions and characteristics different from psychological verbs in speech interaction.In specific use and development,they also reflect certain commonalities and diversities.Based on this,this paper takes the above-mentioned verbs like "g(?)n jué" as the research object,uses the stance triangle analysis framework,and combines theories and methods of conversation analysis to define verbs like "g(?)n jué" as the epistemic stance markers,from the aspects of syntax,semantics and pragmatics,according to the definition and characteristics of stance markers.In specific discussions,we explore the discourse function of these stance markers in synchronic interactive contexts in combination with the sequence environment and speech behavior types,examine the grammaticalization of verbs like "g(?)n jué" from a historical perspective,and analyze the motivation and mechanism of their evolution to stance markers.In addition,the similarities and differences of the position distribution,co-occurrence modality,degree of confidence,pragmatic tendency,and subjective degree among the internal members of the "g(?)n jué"-like stance markers are compared.The basic appearance of the "g(?)n jué"-like psychological verbs expressing subjective cognitive stance in modern Chinese has been systematically and clearly displayed.The article is divided into six chapters as follows:The first chapter is the introduction.It introduces the research background as well as the research subject and then discusses the theoretical and practical significance of the research.Secondly,it reviews the relevant research results at home and abroad from three levels:psychological verbs,stance markers,and the "g(?)n jué"-like verbs.This is used as the basis and reference for the research.Finally,the main content and theoretical methods of the research are clarified,and the corpus basis of this article is briefly explained.The second chapter is the verification of the "g(?)n jué"-like stance markers.We first clarified the scope of the stance by distinguishing similar categories such as metadiscourse,evaluation,modality,evidence and subjectivity.Then Du Bois's stance triangle theoretical model is used to analyze the stance elements and behaviors to judge the "g(?)n jué"-like verbs as the epistemic stance markers in interactive communication.Then based on the categorization theory and specific examples,this chapter further discusses the decategorization performance of the "g(?)n jué"-like verbs in terms of location distribution,syntactic structure,prosody recognition,semantic and pragmatic in order to find the basic conditions for these verbs to work as stance markers.The third chapter examines the role of the "g(?)n jué"-like stance markers in communication from the aspects of sequence position,speech behavior,and pragmatic function.Study has shown that the "g(?)n jué"-like stance markers often appear in adjacent pairs such as "question-answer","initiate-response";they show different cognitive meanings in different contexts,that is,judging the event,evaluating things and phenomenon,expressing subjective estimates,emphasizing causal facts,and putting forward some suggestions,etc.;and they have specific functions in communicative interaction,discourse org(?)nization,and cognitive understanding.These verbs can not only indicate the speaker's attitude and emotion towards the communication content,but also exert illocutionary power to regulate the progress of communication,and construct the context of the position by org(?)nizing the turn and connecting the conversation topics,finally reflect the cognitive psychology distance of people.The fourth chapter focuses on the grammaticalization and subjective process of the"g(?)n jué"-like stance markers.It is found from the diachronic semantic changes of the"g(?)n jué"-like verbs that "g(?)n jué" and "gu ji" are composed of morphemes,while "jué de","ren wei" and "yi wei" derive from phrases.They are all verbs that express objective psychological activities at first,and then the meanings of viewpoint and cognition are extended from the meanings of perceived behaviors,and finally these verbs grammaticalized into the subjective epistemic stance markers.The main motivations for this evolution include the stimulation of the discourse environment where the clause work as the object,the subjective perspective connection of the first person as the subject,the influence of verbal communication strategic,the need for vague expression,and the motivation for high-frequency use.The fifth chapter compares the constituent members of the "g(?)n jué" category of stance markers.In general,the "g(?)n jué"-like stance markers show a rather consistent distribution trend in the syntactic position,that is,they are mostly in the beginning of the sentence and the middle of the turn.Due to the influence of part-of-speech,semantic changes and confidence,the "g(?)n jué"-like stance markers show different degree of tokenization when combined with first-person pronouns,and they also have a clear tendency when combined with subjective components such as modal adverbs.In functional selection,"g(?)n jué" and "jué de" are mostly used to express subjective evaluation of things,"ren wei" and "yi wei" are often used to indicate subjective judgment of things,while "gu ji" emphasizes subjective estimation and speculation.The sixth chapter is the conclusion.It summarizes and generalizes the main viewpoints and demonstration process of this research.The innovations and shortcomings of this study are also indicated at the end of the article.
