Virginia Woolf is a famous British writer, literary critic and literary theorist. She was plagued by psychiatric illness, and ultimately resorted to a tragic suicide so as to set herself free after four spiritual collapses. We can feel Woolf's extremely unstable mental state when reading her works. The psychiatric disease has a certain influence on Woolf herself and her works as well. Therefore, when we are studying Woolf, the influence of the illness on this writer is worthy of our attention and discussion. This dissertation first summarizes her history of psychiatric illness and talks about mental disorder and abnormal behaviors from the perspective of the state of her illness. Then it explains the pressure upon her from the qualitative research on the discourse of "madness" and metaphor, plus the selection of the "madness" theme of her works.Later it discusses the Utopia built upon her gender orientation, gender ideals and gender political background. Then this dissertation emphasizes the influence of her death consciousness on her works under the shadow of death, and discusses the change in her views on death. At last,it discusses the reasons why she constantly relied on her works for the purpose of self-healing and chose to die.In the meanwhile,in combination with medical psychology,it pays close attention to the role and mechanism of Woolf's psychological factors during the occurrence, development and transfer of the illness. All of the above are very helpful for us to understand Woolf in a more rational and deeper way,and to reveal her inner secrets and how Woolf did self-healing by means of literature.
