There is a distinct spatial narrative characteristic in Wang Anyi's novels,mainly reflected in four aspects: form of existence,narration strategies,textual characteristics and reception effects.The existence form of spatial narration in Wang Anyi's works mainly lies in the geographical space,power space,and mind space.The geographical space is mainly reflected by the Shanghai and the rural worlds constructed under the impact of her life experiences;for power space,the author believes that in traditional cultural power environment,city is the space where women are reborn and share the power space with men equally by their skills and wisdom;for mind space,the special narration in her works is enhanced to the level of spiritual connotation as the author sees the novels as the spiritual palaces of human beings.The narration strategies in Wang Anyi's works can be divided into parallel narration,puzzle narration and circle narration.The parallel narration does not tell in a single timeline but in synchronicity;for the puzzle narration,readers have to participate,to supplement the story frame by collecting the fragments to make a complete story;and with circle narration,the author sets the beginning and ending of the story with the same or similar plot,character destiny,spatial images or surroundings,so as to create the effect of repetition,correlation,symmetry and contrast.Linguistic techniques,rhetoric devices and text structure are the three textual characteristics of Wang Anyi's works.Abstract language is the distinct linguistic technique with objective description,a large quantity of verbs and daily words;the rhetoric device of spatial representation gives the text the personified spatial images and spatialized character images;the arena textual structure is represented by the suspenseful plots,contradictions and the intertextuality of the text.The reception effects of Wang Anyi's works consist of three aspects: the openness of the text towards readers,the multidimensional aesthetic experience of readers and the multiple communication between the main characters.The thesis intends to provide a systematic description of Wang Anyi's spatial narrative technique in her works,and also serves as a critical practice of spatial narration theory on the works of outstanding contemporary writer.The thesis provides the cognitive value of Wang Anyi's spatial narrative technique in her works,and aims to push the steps of the spatial narration theory towards a critical level.
