In the face of the major changes in politics,economy and culture in the late Qing dynasty and the period of the republic of China,which brought influence on the development of the Peking Opera,Mei Lanfang upheld the "change" in the artistic creation consciously,facing the challenge of his times.His "change" reflected in singing,music,clothing,makeup,posture,facial expression,material selection,and many other aspects.And the most comprehensive embodiment of “change” spirit is the creation of "Mei dance".Although "Mei dance" can be concluded as part of the work of the performance,it actually radiates many aspects of the art of Peking Opera.Based on the art noumenon of Beijing Opera performing arts,this paper combs and analyzes relevant documentary records and audio-visual materials.It relies on the truth of history,starts from listening to a play to watching a play,and explores the background of "Mei dance",setting about "what is Mei dance" and “why there is Mei dance” through case analysis.Also,it explores the different concepts of Mei dance from the narrow and broad senses.In addition,it further explores its creative spirit,creative methods and artistic pursuit.Through the analysis of "Mei dance" in the inheritance of opera performance's tradition,it explores the possibilities of the development of Peking Opera."Mei dance" is centered on Chengshi(stylized movements in Chinese traditional opera),and it is the core of the drama,pursuing the beauty.“Mei dance” carries on the delivery,propagation and development of the Peking Opera.
