Medical technology is a measure taken to diagnose and treat diseases,to help patients recover, and to relieve pain. However,in today’s unprecedentedly advanced life sciences, some researchers have developed medical technologies that violate ethics and even threaten human survival and development, such as the sensational "Head Transplantation" and "Gene-edited Baby".Such high-risk medical technology, which directly involves major issues such as human birth and death,is called "High Life Medical Technology".This thesis mainly analyzes three representative medical techniques of head transplantation, cryonics and human embryo gene editing. In the contemporary, the diversity of human culture determines that when it comes to science and technology related to social stability and development,it is necessary to analyze and examine the ethical issues of science and technology from multiple cultural perspectives,so that science and technology can truly serve humanity.Ensure that the scientific research behaviors of medical workers can be based on principles and objectives.Human civilization has been diverse and interspersed since ancient times. Therefore, this study chooses a Buddhist idea that has great influence in Eastern countries and even many countries in the world. It conducts ethical inquiry and supplements the Buddhist perspective of high life medical technology ethics. In addition,Buddhist thought,as one of the traditional thoughts in China, has a richer outlook on life, disease, human body, and treatment in human civilization.Besides,Buddhist bioethics has a code of conduct concerning human birth and death. It is a relatively complete and systematic theory,so it can be a very effective supplement to explore the ethical issues of high life medical technology. This study uses literature analysis, case analysis, and interdisciplinary research methods to comprehensively explore the Buddhist bioethics of head transplantation, cryonics, and human embryo gene editing technology. The medical links related to prolonging life and treating genetic diseases are extracted and analyzed from the perspective of Buddhist ethics. The analysis includes two directions, that is,what technology is and whether it should exist. In addition, consider the behavioral methods andbehavioral motivations of related technical medical workers from the perspective of Buddhism, and then draw on the essence of Buddhist thoughts that can be beneficial to the development of the situation and give suggestions.Researching the Buddhist bioethics of head transplantation. It is mainly based on the core values of Mahayana Buddhism, such as "the mind exists in the body","self-denial," "self-interest," and "compassion and altruism." Based on theories of epistemology, death, cause and effect, and disease origin, the necessity of head transplantation and the ethical issues raised by it are expounded.According to research and analysis,it is concluded that Buddhism does not support the medical technique of head transplantation, and it is suggested that researchers conducting related research should terminate this.Researching the Buddhist bioethics of cryonics. It was found that the technology that attempts to treat death as a "disease" is incompatible with Buddhist bioethics.Buddhism believes that the ethical problems of cryonics mainly include three aspects: cryonics is not correct in determining the death of the body, and the technology is harmful to the life of the dying person who still has a sense of consciousness;this technique can only freeze the physical body as a part of life, but not the non-physical parts of life;the technology cannot revive life that already exists in another space. As a result, studies have concluded that Buddhism does not recognize the argument of cryonics for physical death and the practice of freezing and resurrecting the body.Researching the Buddhist bioethics of human embryo gene editing.Human embryo gene editing can also be referred to as germline gene editing. This technique is different from somatic gene editing and is hereditary. The "He Jiankui Gene Editing Event" at the end of 2018 made people around the world have a deeper understanding of gene editing technology. This section is based on the core values of Buddhism such as "the principle of protecting life","using a good heart" and "origination".In addition, ethical research is carried out around the judgment standard of embryo perception, the motivation of gene editing and gene therapy. This study gives four suggestions for the research results of Buddhist ethics of high life medical technology, that is,multi-angle review and careful use of high life medical technology;refine the ethical principles of the third type of medical technology;clarify the authority and ethics review committee at all levels responsibilities;incorporate the concepts of "good" and "compassion" into the moral standards of medical researchers. Finally, point out three shortcomings ofthis research, and hope that in the future,we can study the ethical issues of high life medical technology in depth and make up for the shortcomings. |
