While the inventory of medical consumables is an important condition for ensuring the stable and sustainable development of a hospital, inventory level directly affects the diagnose and treatment quality and service level of a hospital. In recent years, with the acceleration of the development of GS Hospital, the increase in clinical staff’s demand for medical consumables and the changes of such demand, existing inventory management methods cannot meet the needs of the development of GS Hospital. While inventory management of medical consumables is the hospital’s third profit source that is not developed yet, efficient and appropriate inventory management is an inevitable course for the hospital to reduce management costs, improve management and maintain sustainable development.Based on the actual situation of GS hospital’s inventory of medical consumables, the characteristics of the demand for medical consumables and the problems in inventory management are analyzed in this paper to optimize the inventory of low-value medical consumables.First of all,ABC classification method is adopted in this paper to reasonably classify low-value medical consumables.Secondly, through analyzing historical data, the index smoothing forecasting method is adopted to forecast the demand for low-value medical consumables, thus providing reference for the procurement of such consumables. And then, different inventory control models are developed for different categories of low-value medical consumables. The study shows that, for Category A consumables that will occupy more funds,EOQ model can be adopted to figure out the optimal order frequency and order quantity, thus effectively reducing total inventory costs. At last, analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method are adopted to build an evaluation model to comprehensively evaluate the status of GS Hospital’s inventory management of medical consumables before and after optimization. The aim of this paper is to optimize current inventory management of medical consumables with more scientific and effective quantitative analysis methods to reduce inventory and procurement and inventory costs, thus enabling the hospital to maintain high clinical service level with the lowest possible inventory.
