Objectives:1 To design a blended learning based on Community of Inquiry(CoI)and construct the online open course of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing for providing high-quality teaching resources.2 To evaluate the effects of blended learning based on CoI applied in Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing.3 To explore the learning experience of nursing undergraduates in the blended course for improving blended learning scheme.Methods:1 Using literature review and brainstorming with students, teachers and experts for designing the blended learning scheme.2 Setting up the resource provision group, platform design group and maintenance group for constructing the online open course of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing.3 Before the beginning of the course,536 nursing undergraduates in Chongqing Medical University were investigated with Critical ThinkingDisposition Inventory-Chinese Version(CTDI-CV).Using statistical methods of T-test and variance analysis to understand the critical thinking ability of nursing undergraduates.4 Two classes of grade 2016 were randomly divided into the control group(n=124)and experimental group(n=126).In Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, the routine teaching method was applied in the control group, while the blended learning based on CoI was applied in the experimental group. The blended learning included creating the teaching presence, playing the intermediary role of social presence to realize cognitive presence.5 At the end of the course, the theoretical examination,Rating Scale of CTDI-CV and Community of Inquiry-Chinese Version(CoI-CV)were used to evaluate the effects.Using statistical methods of T-test and Chi-square test to analyze the data.6 Using purpose sampling method,24 nursing undergraduates in the experimental group were recruited to conduct focus group interviews to explore the learning experience.Using a qualitative content analysis methodology to distill the theme.Results:1 Formed a blended learning scheme based on CoI,and completed the construction of the online open course of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing.2 At the start of the course, the total score of critical thinking ability of nursing undergraduates was(287.72 ±27.22).The score of inquisitiveness dimension was the highest with(44.08 ±6.41),and the score of critical thinking self-confidence dimension was the lowest with(36.62 ±6.07).The main influencing factors of critical thinking competence was the number of extracurricular activities per week(P < 0.05).3 After the course, the examination scores in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05).The scores of truth-seeking of CTDI-CV in the experimental group was better than that of the control group(P <0.05).The levels of the three presences of CoI in the experimental group were high approaching 4 points.4 Three themes emerged from the analysis of the nursing undergraduates' perceptions: Role Promotion,Passive and Selective Learning, and Recommendations.Conclusions:1 The critical thinking ability of nursing undergraduates needs to be improved. The blended learning course of nursing should be reconstructed. The critical thinking self-confidence should be raising in the teaching process.2 The blended learning based on CoI can improve the teaching effects and make students get a good learning experience. The impact on critical thinking needs to be observed for a long time.3 Teachers and peers play an important role in promoting learning. The blended learning environment still needs to be improved.Educational institutions could extend the teaching model in all phases of nursing professional development.
