Objective:Running is one of the most popular recreational sports activities in recent years because of its low cost and easy accessibility. However, due to some internal and external running risk factors,running-related injuries occurring in lower extremity was reported from 19.4% to 79.3%,and the more mileage you run,the greater risk of injury you may have.Among the common knee injuries prevention and treatment, recent studies have demonstrated that Kinesio taping(KT)could stimulate the muscle continuously, and which characteristic could improve neuromuscular control of runners. Therefore, the aim of our studies was to explore the effects of KT on runners’ knee joint neuromuscular control and postural control stability. And utilizing neuromuscular control mechanism to explore the time effect of KT.Providing evidence and theoretical support for sports injuries prevention and rehabilitation. Methods: A total of 35 healthy males were recruited from the Shanghai university of sport(aged of 22.49±2.63 years;body height of 176.36±5.28 cm;body mass of 71.23±7.80 kg).KT would be applied on the quadriceps femoris in attempt to stimulate it.Four taping sequence in four different weeks were used for the completion of the experimental conditions in counterbalanced order: No taping(NT),Placebo taping(PT),Kinesio taping with tension(KT-T),Kinesio taping with no tension(KT-NT).Y-balance test was used to explore different taping group and time effect on participants lower extremity dynamic balance function;CON-TREX isokinetic dynamometer was used to explore different taping group and time effect on participants’ knee proprioception and muscle strength;Neurocom balance manger was used to explore the postural control stability difference under the intervention of taping. The sample frequency was set at 100 Hz.All statistics were performed using SPSS 22 software(IBM,Armonk,NY,USA).Repeated Measures ANOVA was used to explore the difference between the taping group and time effect. All data were presented as mean and standard deviation(SD).Significance was set at alpha < 0.05,and where significant effects were found,Bonferroni post-hoc tests were conducted to compare the specific difference.Results:1.Y-Balance test: No significant difference was found in anterior, posteromedial, posterolateral and composite score between the taping and short time effect.However,anterior(F(3,32)=4.918,P = 0.010,η2 = 0.035),posterolateral(F(3,32)=7.913,P = 0.001,η2 = 0.055),composite distance(F(3,32)=5.356,P = 0.009,η2 = 0.038)were found significant improved on the time effect.Further, visual analogue scale was also found improved(F(3,32)=7.149,P = 0.005,η2 = 0.050)during this short time period.2.Proprioception test: No interaction effect was found between the taping group and time effect, and knee proprioception was not improved during the short time.3.Isokinetic muscle strength test:We only found significant interact effect between taping group and time effect(F(3,32)=2.389,P = 0.029,η2 = 0.050)in peak torque during the concentric contraction of quadriceps, but no significant difference was found in peak torque between the four taping groups in short time. There was also no significant interact effect in peak torque, time to peak torque and average power in the condition of eccentric contraction of quadriceps, and also no significant difference was found between the four taping methods in short time.4.Postural control test:For SOT test,KT-T was superior than PT in condition 4(F(3,32)=3.173,P = 0.001,95% CI=1.404 to 6.387),NT in condition 5(F(3,32)= 2.752,P = 0.012,95% CI = 0.765 to 8.551).Significant different was found between these four taping groups in condition 1(F(3,32)=3.543,P = 0.017,η2 = 0.094),although the specific difference was not found. No significant difference was found between these four groups during MCT test. For LOS test, significant difference was found between these four groups during the composite of movement velocity(F(3,32)=2.864,P = 0.040,η2 = 0.078).Additionally,the visual analogue scale to assess the comfort of knee taping was demonstrated that KT-T was significantly superior than NT(F(3,32)=4.112,P = 0.003,95% CI=0.183-1.155).Conclusion:Compare with NT,PT,KT-NT,KT with 50% tension have the potential to improve the Y balance function within short time(0min,30 min,60min).However,we found no significant difference of taping on runners’ knee proprioception and muscle strength of quadriceps during isokinetic exercise, which effect was not change over the short time.Kinesio taping may help maintain the stability of COG in different sensory environment(vision, vestibular). However, when confront more difficulty unexpected translational perturbations in the standing plate and intentionally lean their body in 8 given direction, proprioception stimulation and the force produced by KT is not large enough to improve the postural control stability.
