Comparative Study On Time Efficiency Of Lingual Orthodontic Appliances And Labial Orthodontic Appliances

Objective: To compare the clinical time efficiency of lingual orthodontic appliances and labial orthodontic appliances.Method: Sixty patients who were enrolled in this study 15 patients were accepted with customized lingual appliances,15 patients were accepted with self-ligating customized lingual appliances(elock),30 patients were accepted with self-ligating labial appliances(ebrace).The chair time and the total operation time of the clinical phrases before treatment were measured and the ligation time of both dental arches with 0.012 Ni Ti,0.016 Ni Ti,0.016×22 Ni Ti and 0.016×22 stainless archwires was measured.Results: The results showed that the chair time of customized lingual appliances with indirect bonding method was(1116.23±33.65)s and the chair time of labial appliances with direct bonding was(1872.76±89.54)s.There was a significant difference between the two groups(p<0.01).The total operation time of customized lingual appliances with indirect bonding method was(2154.44±77.67)s and the total operation time of labial appliances with indirect bonding was(4094.76±79.43)s.There was a significant difference between the two groups(p<0.01).The time needed to insert a 0.012 inch Ni Ti archwire with self-ligating customized lingual appliances into each patient’s upper dental arches was(181.93±46.97)s and the time needed with self-ligating labial appliances was(175.27±49.26)s.There was no significant difference between the two groups(p>0.05).The time needed to insert a 0.012 inch Ni Ti archwire with traditional customized lingual appliances into patient’s upper dental arches was(1080.24±36.26)s.There was a significant difference between the self-ligating lingual group and the ligating lingual group(p<0.01).The self-ligating lingual group displayed a significantly less chair time than the ligating lingual group.Conclusions: The bonding and locating efficiency of customized lingual appliances is higher than the labial appliances.The self-ligating lingual appliances can reduce the chair time necessary for inserting and removing the archwire and the clinical efficiency is almost no difference between the self-ligating customized lingual appliances and the self-ligating labial appliances.
