Naringin was one of the traditional Chinese medicine extracts that was effective for osteoporosis and helped bone regeneration.Electrospun nanofiber for drug delivery had been reported previously, however,it usually caused a drug burst release.Beaded nanofibers with special bead-on-string structures might help to control release properties.By changing the solution concentration before electrospinning,a beaded structure was acquired. With reductions in solution concentration, higher bead numbers and thinner fiber diameters were produced,as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The beaded nanofibers also had a faster degradation rate and a slower release rate. And the 8% membrane with more beads exhibited the best release ability.SEM and CLSM images showed MC3T3-E1 cells that displayed excellent cell affinity on beaded and smooth electrospun membranes. In vitro studies showed that all these materials provided sufficient superficial area for cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. This study suggested that beaded nanofibres encapsulating naringin with controlled and sustained release profiles could potentially be applied in bone tissue engineering.
