| Objective To explore the relationship between sarcopenia and biceps muscle thickness(MT),fat thickness(FT),muscle cross-sectional area(CSA)detected by ultrasound. Methods 179 subjects aged over 60 in the health management center of the first affiliated hospital of medical college of Zhejiang university were selected.Muscle mass, grip strength,MT,FT and CSA were measured and recorded.Spearman test was used to analyze the correlation between all kinds of parameters in both genders.Mann-whitey U test was used to analyze the differences between two groups.Age,sex,BMI,FT,MT,and CSA were included in the binary logistic regression analysis to examine the predictors of low muscle mass. Results In males, both MT and CSA were positively correlated with muscle mass(r=0.359,0.460;P<0.05).And both were significantly lower in the low muscle mass group than in the normal muscle mass group(P<0.05).While in females, both FT and CSA were positively correlated with muscle mass(r=0.226,0.267;P<0.05).FT was significantly lower in the low muscle mass group than in the normal muscle mass group(P<0.05).Both MT and CSA of biceps were positively correlated with grip strength in males and females(r=0.399,0.433;P<0.05;r=0.317,0.392;P<0.05).The CSA in the low grip strength group and sarcopenia group were significantly lower than that in the normal grip strength group and non-sarcopenia group.Binary logistic regression analysis showed that gender,BMI and CSA were the predictors of low muscle mass. Conclusion Ultrasound detection of biceps brachii CSA can predict muscle mass.CSA is also positively correlated with grip strength. |
