The Effect Of Medical Student Volunteer Team On Quality Of Life For The Frailty Elderly In Nursing Homes

Objectives To investigate the quality of life of the frailty elderly in nursing homes for building interventions from medical student volunteer team to improve their quality of life of the elderly in nursing homes,and validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the protocols.Methods This project consisted of two parts and used the below research methods: The first part was observational study.The situation and influence factors of quality of life of the 300 elderly with frailty in nursing homes were analyzed through present survey.The second part was quasi-experimental study.To verify the effect of medical student volunteer team intervention on the frailty elderly in nursing homes,two nursing homes were randomly selected in a cluster.The intervention group(n=38)and control group(n=39)were divided by coin toss.The elderly with frailty in intervention group were provided group care for eight weeks,while the control group just received traditional intervention.The data were collected at pre-intervention,post-intervention and two month after intervention,the effect of intervention were evaluated by quality of life,health promoting lifestyle and score of loneliness.Mean and standard deviation were used to describe measurement data,frequency and percentage were used to describe counting data.Outcome measures at different time points were compared by repeated measures anova,Indicators at the same time point were compared by t test of two independent samples.Results The average score of quality of life for the elderly with frailty in nursing institutions was(386.92±62.75)relatively low,which was affected by multiple factors including age,education level,chronic disease as well as recreational activities.After intervention,the quality of life increased significantly,the difference were statistically significantly(P<0.05);the score of promoting lifestyle was higher than that of control group(P<0.05);The level of loneliness was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusions The quality of life of the frailty elderly in nursing homes is related to lifestyle and loneliness.The intervention of medical student volunteer team can change their lifestyle,improve their quality of life of the frailty elderly in nursing homes and reduce the level of loneliness.
