Objectives:To investigate the expression of serum galectin-3(Gal-3)in maintenance peritoneal dialysis patients and its correlation to cardiovascular disease(CVD).Methods:Patients with maintenance peritoneal dialysis(MPD)admitted in hospital of Dalian Central Hospital from August 2017 to March 2018 meeting the criteria for joining the group were enrolled in this study as MPD group.Routine laboratory examination of hemoglobin,serum total protein,serum albumin,total cholesterol,low density lipoprotein,triacylglycerol,serum calcium,serum phosphorus,intact parathyroid hormone(iPTH),hypersensitive C-reactive protein,collected patients’ age,sex,clinical informations such as primary diseases,dialysis age,past medical history,smoking history,etc.And recorded the occurrence of cardiovascular disease at that time.Patients with MPD were divided into cardiovascular disease group(CVD group)and non-cardiovascular disease group(No-CVD group)according to the occurrence of cardiovascular disease.And normal subjects matched with age and sex of patients with MPD were selected in the same period from medical examination center in our hospital as control group.Serum Gal-3 levels were measured by using enzyme linked immunosortbent assay(ELISA).Echocardiograhy was used to detect cardiac function,including to left artrial diameter(LAD),left ventricular diameter(LVD),left ventricular ejection(LVEF),interventricular spetum(IVS).SPSS13.0 software was used for statistical analysis: the enumeration data were compared with each other by chisquare test or Fisher test.T-test was used in the inter-group comparison for the measurement data which were in accordance with the normal distribution.For the measurement date of the non-normal distribution,non-parametric test for inter-group comparison.The correlation between Gal-3 and other indexes was analyzed by linear regression analysis.The correlation factors of cardiovascular disease in patients withMPD were analyzed by Logistic regression.And there was difference in the two groups(P < 0.05),the statistical difference was significant(P < 0.01).Results:(1)In a total of 80 MPD patients were enrolled,40 healthy controls.Among the 80 patients with MPD,37 were male and 43 were female.The mean age was 60.0 ±11.4 years old.There were 31 cases of cardiovascular disease and 49 cases of non-cardiovascular disease.The primary diseases including: 34 cases of diabetic nephropathy,18 cases of hypertension nephropathy,25 cases of chronic glomerulonephritis and 3 cases of chronic interstitial glomerulonephritis.(2)The average serum levels of Gal-3 in the MPD group was 21.8±5.2 ng/ml,and the average serum levels of Gal-3 in the healthy control group was 13.8±2.7ng/ml,the levels of Gal-3 in MPD patients were significantly higher than those in healthy control,P<0.001.(3)The single factor correlation analysis indicated that the serum levels of Gal-3 in MPD patients was positively related to age(r=0.52,P<0.001),hemoglobin(r=0.288,P=0.01),diastolic pressure(r=0.358,P=0.001),and negatively related to serum albumin(r=-0.293,P=0.008),rGFR(r=-0.235,P=0.014),and had a correlation with the combined diabetes mellitus(r=0.237,P=0.034),the difference was statistically significant.(4)Compared with the no cardiovascular disease group,patients in cardiovascular disease group had significantly increased in hemoglobin,serum phosphorus,serum Gal-3 level,LAD,LVD,IVS,but serum albumin,EF% dropped significantly(all P<0.05).(5)Univariate Logistic regression analysis showed that hemoglobin,serum albumin,serum phosphorus,serum Gal-3,LAD,LVD,EF% and IVS were associated with cardiovascular disease in MPD patients.Further Multivariate Logistic regression analysis,taking the above factors for cardiovascular disease in patients with MPD in the Multivariate Logistic regression analysis,the results showed that hemoglobin,serum albumin,LAD,serum Gal-3 were independently correlated with cardiovascular disease in MPD patients,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions:The serum levels of Gal-3 in MPD patients was significantly higher than that of the healthy population,and associated with multiple cardiovascular risk factors.Compared with the no cardiovascular disease group,patients in cardiovasculardisease group had significantly increased in serum levels of Gal-3.Serum Gal-3 is one of independently correlated with cardiovascular disease in patients with MPD.
